The Path of Sorrows
Christian Death Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

R.Williams
Across the abyss
This weary traveler struggles on
Casting his eyes upon the ground, he cries out
"Is there no end to this immortal pain that haunts me?"
Thou hast become the path and the way
That leadeth to destruction
Be thou accursed
Be thou abolished
Be thou annihilated
Testify that all is vanity
In heaven as on earth
Dressed in universal torment
Crying openly
As I engage myself in prayer.
"Bring me through midnight to the sun!"
As I enflame myself with prayer
"Bring me through midnight to the sun!"
Everythings in motion, everything lies still
Through the veil of sorrow
And the pall of death
Everything's in motion, everything lies still
Through the veil of sorrow
And the pall of death
Like that of a drowning man
His life flashes before him
Turning his eyes away in shame, he cries out
"Is there no pity for a blind man such as me?"
Thou has become the path and the way
That leadeth to destruction
Be thou accursed
Be thou abolished
Be thou annihilated
Eyes, feet, hips start moving
Where the laurels grow
Another sacrifice
Stains the tomb of human despair
As I enflame myself with prayer
"Bring me through midnight to the sun!"
Everything's in motion, everything lies still

On the path of sorrows
On the road to death

Overall Meaning

The Path of Sorrows by Christian Death Featuring Rozz Williams is a song that meditates on the futility of life and the inevitability of death. The lyrics describe a weary traveler who is struggling through the abyss, looking for an end to his pain. The lyrics convey a sense of hopelessness and despair as the traveler realizes that his path leads only to destruction. The traveler cries out, wondering if there is any pity for a blind man like him. The repeated verse of "Thou has become the path and the way that leadeth to destruction, be thou accursed, be thou abolished, be thou annihilated, testify that all is vanity", reinforces the theme of hopelessness and the inevitability of death.

The lyrics also suggest that the path of life is a constant cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The traveler is dressed in universal torment and cries openly as he engages himself in prayer, striving to find solace in a higher power. He enflames himself with prayer, hoping it will bring him through midnight to the sun, but it seems like an impossible task. Through the veil of sorrow and the pall of death, everything lies still. All the while, the laurels keep growing as other sacrifices are made, staining the tomb of human despair, indicating that life moves on without a care in the world.

I'd totally forgot about this album until tonight. I think I bought it on cassette in like '93. I still prefer Only theatre of pain and Catastrope Ballet, my two favorites, but this one was still good and so different from the others. I'll get it again as I'm still a pretty big Christian Death fan. Thanks for the vid !!

Thank you Rainbow Neko for posting this album... I am a Christian Death admirer from way back. My obsession began in 1985. This album is superb! I kind of remember it from the early 1990s. I have been enjoying all the tracks from it you have posted. I just wanted you to know that it is appreciated.8^)>

@Christian Blade A great loss to music period.

Rozz's Lyrics are sometimes very, very obscure indeed, just like Peter Murphy(taking his cues from David Bowie and others) In some songs like this one, there is not too much obscurity.... One can read between the lines, and still get the meaning. In some other songs, you need to do a bit of digging to understand the meaning.

Christian Blade

I can't think of any other gothic band that was quite as artistic, thought provoking, and poetic as Rozz. I liked Shadow Project too. His death was indeed a great loss to the genre.
