A native of Montreal, Beck studied music at Yale University and film scoring at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where he was taught by Jerry Goldsmith among others.
He won an Emmy Award in 1998 for his work on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He has also worked on Angel and The Practice. His film credits include Bring It On (2000), Confidence (2003), American Wedding (2003), Elektra (2005) and Frozen (2013).
He graduated high school from Crescent School in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The version of this theme that plays in the episode of Angel called "I Will Remember You" is the saddest, most epic piece of music ever. It's also one of the saddest freaking episodes ever, because they are finally together and happy at last, and then all of their memories are erased like it never happened. The entire day was "swallowed up" when the clock struck, and only Angel himself would remember it all. TOO MUCH, MAN. TOO MUCH.
