Paint it Black
Ciara Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see your red door, I want it painted black
No colors any more, I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I see the line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love, both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly looked away
Like a newborn baby it just happens everyday

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door, I must have it painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me before the morning comes

(I want to see your face painted black
Black as night, black as coal
See the sun blotted out from the sky)

I've seen your red door and I want it painted black
No colors any more, I want them to turn black

I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ciara's "Paint It Black" are a modern interpretation of The Rolling Stones classic song of the same name. The song is about a person who is struggling with depression and hopelessness. The singer sees the world as gray and wants to "paint it black" to match their own internal darkness. When they see other people enjoying life or love, they turn away from it because they cannot relate to it. The line "Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts" represents the feeling of wanting to give up and disappear.

The reference to the "red door" in the song represents the entrance to the singer's home, a place that should be a safe haven but instead is a constant reminder of the darkness within themselves. The mention of cars painted black with flowers and love that will never return encapsulates the feeling of loss and grief that the singer is experiencing.

The final stanza of the song represents a glimmer of hope that the singer is holding onto. They hope to find some light at the end of the tunnel and their love will eventually laugh with them before the morning comes. The song ends on a bittersweet note, with the singer still struggling with their internal battles but holding onto hope for a brighter future.

Looks like you were just looking for a reason to throw some shade to me. Had to hate on it. Needed her to have done something wrong so that you could insinuate low key hateraid and people would feel like they were wrong, fake or disloyal for liking it at all because she 'stole" it without giving credit

This song truly represents Paint It Black in its darkest of light. Its verses describing the eyes of a Marine who comes home from Vietnam.

"I see a Red Door and I want to paint it black."
Coming home after all he's been through and wishes it was black, for it deserves no color.

"No colors anymore, I want them to turn black."
Colors that express different emotions, but black is all he feels. Emptiness.

"I see girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes, I have to turn my head until my darkness goes."
With his anger, sorrow and the despair that lingers within his heart, he turns away to avoid all contact.

"I see a line of cars and they're all painted black."
A line of cars that are black usually carry the dead, in this case, his fallen comrades to their final resting place.

"With flowers and my love, both never to come back."
My guess here, tossing flowers and surrendering love to them as both would never come back to him.

"I see people turn their heads and quickly look away"
When Vietnam veterans came back home, dead or alive, many people turned their heads in disrespect or without regard.

"Like a newborn baby it just happens everyday."
Losses in Vietnam were heavy and people just became somewhat immune to it as if it never really mattered to them.

"I look inside myself and see my heart is black."
As days pass on, he looks into hisself and sees his heart turning black, succumbing to the horrors that he brought home and the feeling of emptiness quickly taking over his soul. Darkness is all he feels at this point...

"I see my Red Door and must have it painted black."
With all the disrespect received, the hate thrown and uneducated statements followed by deaths of his brothers in arms and the hell that he walked through, his red door of his own home is desired to be black as the exterior of a coffin.

"Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts, It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black"
In his mind, he believes that if he simple just goes away and not face the facts of what he had done, such as the burning of huts and accepting his fate to the onslaught of politcal slander in view of the public, he won't have to face up for his world is all but black. Emptiness, similar to the casket in which he wishes to be in.

"No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue, I could not foresee this thing happening to you"
As he looks on to the sea and near the shore, it is green, he cannot see it going blue as he looks farther into the horizon as you mostly do in most places. That and not forseeing this happening to anyone else meaning he wouldn't ever think of this happening to anyone else other than he and those who followed him into battle.

"If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes"
Purely my guess: Looking hard enough into the horizon of the dusk, love will laugh in mocking fashion before the morning comes. The Devil laughing at his current situation as he enters into a severe depressive suicidal state and of instability, mocking him as it all slowly turns black into night.

"I wanna see it painted, painted black. Black as night, black as coal. I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky."
Its as this point that all of his flashbacks from the war had taken its toll on his sanity. His heart filled with eternal emptiness, sadness and hatred eventually driving him to his end. Desiring everything to be black around him. Black as Night, Black as coal. The sun to be blotted out from the sky, as in the doors of the casket shutting upon him for his desire to live has reached its end point.

Now, picture another line of cars, all painted black and his spirit, sitting on top of his casket, seeing girls dressed in their summer clothes. People looking away as if it was just another day. His Spirit turns away then looks at the sky, the sun blotted by a thick black cloud with patches of darkness throughout and a chilling wind as they near his own final resting place. Then as they drive away, fading to black... for it is all painted black.

This is my take on the song itself, Paint It Black, made by the Rolling Stones as one of their war protest songs from the 60s. The instruments here truly make it the song's essence: A depressing and dark song that expresses what the lyrics describe. But that ending with the background singers, truly grasps just what our heroes went through and received coming back.
