Set Yourself Free
Clémentine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I am on solid ground
And if you are scared
I'll hold your hand
And make you swear
You're not going anywhere
Sometimes I get lost
I lose sight of what I want
And I hate what I've become
Dependent on you
Dependent on you for love
Dependent on someone else but myself
So let it be known
I am alone
But not lonely
And if you are missing me
Then find it within you to
Set us both free
To set us both free
So set us both free
Set us both free
Set us both free
The lyrics of Clementine's song "Set Yourself Free" convey a message of finding independence, overcoming fears, and allowing oneself to let go and move on. The first stanza sets the scene of a person reaching out to another, offering their support and reassurance. The singer acknowledges the fear that the other person may have, but promises to be there and make them feel safe. The line "make you swear you're not going anywhere" implies the singer's desire for the other person to commit to staying and not running away.
The second stanza reveals the singer's struggle with losing themselves in the anticipation of the future. They admit to losing sight of their own desires and not liking the person they have become as they have become overly reliant on someone else for love. This reliance has made them feel dependent and perhaps powerless. This realization highlights their need to break free from this dependency and regain their own sense of self.
In the following stanza, the singer declares their current state of being alone but not lonely. This is an important distinction, as it suggests that even though they may not have another person by their side, they have found a sense of contentment and self-sufficiency in their solitude. It reflects a personal growth and realization that they can be strong and happy on their own.
The final stanza includes a plea for the other person to set both of them free. This line conveys the singer's desire for the other person to also find their sense of independence and liberation. It suggests that both parties may be trapped in a cycle of codependency and need to break free together. By letting go and allowing each other to explore their own paths, they can find freedom and move on from their current situation. The repetition of "set us both free" emphasizes the importance of this liberation and the possibility of a shared journey towards self-discovery and personal growth.
