A researcher of Brazilian popular music, its rhythms and folklore, she has also traveled to many countries representing the Brazilian culture. A connoisseur of African music, dance, traditions, and religions, she converted to Candomblé and took Afro-Brazilian culture into her songs and costumes. She was one of the singers who recorded the most songs by the composers of Portela, her favorite samba school. She was also the first female Brazilian singer to sell more than one hundred thousand records, breaking a taboo according to which women did not sell records in Brazil. During her whole career she sold four million four hundred thousand records. She was considered by Rolling Stone magazine as the ninth greatest Brazilian voice and, by the same magazine, the fifty-first greatest Brazilian artist of all time.
On April 2, 1983, she died at age 40, after suffering from anaphylaxis during a surgery to treat varicose veins. Even today she remains one of the most popular singers in Brazil.

Terezinha mandou convidar
No domingo vai dar um jantar
Terezinha mandou convidar
No domingo vai dar um jantar
É um peixe com coco eu vou lá
É um peixe com coco eu vou lá
É um peixe com coco eu vou lá
A pinga vem do alambique
Valdomiro foi buscar
Terezinha na cozinha
Um peixe com coco tem bom paladar
É um peixe com coco eu vou lá
Antes do peixe tem tira gosto
Tem sardinha, tem ostra e atum
Tem manjuba, mexilhão, marisco
Tem agulha frita, siri, guaiamum
É um peixe com coco eu vou lá
Refrão
No tempero tem salsa e tem cheiro
Cebolinha, tomate e limão
E tem alho, pimenta do reino
Tem coco, dendê, suco de camarão
É um peixe com coco eu vou lá
No final já de barriga cheia
O partido vai continuar
Todo mundo afroxando a correia
Cantando e sambando até o sol raiar
É um peixe com coco eu vou lá
The lyrics of Clara Nunes's song Peixe com Coco describe an invitation to a dinner party hosted by Terezinha on a Sunday. The main dish of the meal is a fish cooked with coconut, which the singer eagerly anticipates. The song also mentions other seafood appetizers that will be served before the main course, such as sardines, oysters, and clams, among others. The lyrics also describe the cooking process of the fish and the various ingredients used in its seasoning, such as lime, garlic, and pepper, as well as traditional Brazilian ingredients such as dendê oil and camarão juice.
Overall, the song portrays the joyful and convivial atmosphere of a Brazilian meal, where friends and family gather around the table to share food, music, and good company. The chorus repeats the invitation to the dinner party and suggests the singer's eagerness to attend and enjoy the fish with coconut.
The song's upbeat rhythm and joyful lyrics reflect the rich cultural heritage of Brazil's cuisine and musical traditions. Moreover, the use of seafood in the song highlights the importance of the ocean and its resources in Brazilian culture, especially in coastal areas like Bahia, where the dish of Peixe com Coco originated.
