Buried Dreams
Clock DVA Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

La Comtesse de Sang
Your seeds of madness
The colour of eternity
They blossom in torture
In an autumn of fear
In a harvest of pain
In a garden of evil
La Comtesse de Sang
Can you recall
The faces
The bodies
The voices
The blood that flows each dawn
A chemical nightmare
Just look in the mirror
Stain of your image
Burnt into metal

La Comtesse de Sang
They could not destroy you
Only keep you prisoner
And left you to die
And buried your dreams
With the earth of justice
And they could not suppress
The darkness the image the power

La Comtesse de Sang
Your seeds of madness
The colour of eternity
They blossom in torture
In an autumn of fear

In a harvest of pain
In a garden of evil

Overall Meaning

The song "Buried Dreams" by Clock DVA is a haunting and poetic tribute to the life of Elizabeth Bathory, a notorious Hungarian countess who lived in the 16th century. Known as the "Blood Countess," Bathory was accused of torturing and killing young girls for years, often bathing in their blood as a supposed method of maintaining her youth and beauty. The lyrics draw heavily on this gruesome history, using vivid and disturbing imagery to explore the depths of Bathory's madness.

The first stanza sets the stage, painting a picture of a garden gone terribly wrong - a twisted reflection of everything one might hope for in a place of growth and beauty. In the second stanza, Bathory herself is directly addressed, her memories of her victims woven together with the physical image she sees in the mirror each day. The third stanza explores the aftermath of her crimes - the punishment of imprisonment and death, and yet the persistence of her dark legacy.

Overall, Clock DVA's lyrics in "Buried Dreams" are both beautiful and chilling, capturing the essence of Bathory's monstrous deeds in a way that feels both intimate and haunting.

You must play this wrapped in the realm of darkness to appreciate sheer unrelenting genius of Adi Newton. It's one of my favorite albums of all time. I bought the Wax Trax vinyl 30 years ago.

I feel old, but this album hasn't lost a thing! <3

This is perfection from start to finish. Had a privilege to see Clock DVA live performing some songs from slbum

This still sounds as fresh today as it did 30 years ago when I first heard it. Yes, that's 1989
And it's still my No.1 Clock DVA album. Man Amplified is a very close second.

Transitional Voices (if you can find a copy) is excellent too.

It would be really great to get an interview with Adi Newton up on YT.
