Originally rising to fame as lead singer in the Christian rock band, Messenger, formed in 2010, he became a favorite during the early auditions of American Idol. Dixon auditioned in the tenth season, along with his sister Schyler, at the Nashville auditions. However, neither of them ended up in the Top 24. After he was sent home, Dixon performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on March 3, 2011.
Dixon returned in season 11, however he did not plan to audition, initially planning to merely accompany his sister Schyler to her audition. The judges implored Dixon to audition as well, where he sang David Cook's "Permanent". Both he and Schyler were awarded golden tickets. Schyler was cut yet again during the Las Vegas round, which brought him to tears.
On February 23, 2012, Dixon was placed in the season 11 Top 25. In the semi-finals, he performed Paramore's "Decode". He was one of the top five male vote getters and advanced into the Top 13.

I'm drifting farther from your reach
Went down by the waves and winds
Comes down the seek as well
You are the one thing that I need
This is my only hope but you never let me go
I need an anchor to hold me throw the storm
I'm cryin' out, I'm going down
Hold me in, I need you now
My savior, I need an anchor
See you lie and tarrying at the sky
My darkest feels are on the way
So it's my undying faith cuz I know you'll walk away
Speak for this stealing ' to alive
I need an anchor to hold me throw the storm
I see the danger can't fight it on my own
I'm cryin' out, I'm going down
Hold me in, I need you now
My savior, I need an anchor
Save my soul, save my soul, save our soul
Save my soul, save my soul, save our soul
This is my hope, that you never let me go
I need an anchor to hold me throw the storm
I see the danger can't fight it on my own
I'm cryin' out, I'm going down
Hold me in, I need you now
My savior, I need an anchor
I need an anchor
In Colton Dixonโs song โAnchor,โ he describes the feeling of being lost at sea, drifting farther from the safety and comfort of his faith. He references the waves and winds that threaten to overcome him, and the need for something to hold him steady during the storm. He acknowledges that he is unable to fight the danger on his own and needs an anchor to keep him from going under. Dixon recognizes that his only hope is in God, who has never let him go and is the one thing that he needs.
The term โanchorโ represents a symbol of stability, safety, and security. In times of turbulence, people often cling to something that will keep them grounded and secure. For Dixon, this safety comes from his faith in God, which he relies on as an anchor to hold him through the storms of life. He recognizes that his faith is what gives him hope in the darkest of times, and the only way to overcome his struggle is to put his trust in something greater than himself.
Overall, โAnchorโ is a song of hope, faith, and the recognition of oneโs own limitations. The lyrics connect with the listener on a deep level, reminding us all that we need something to hold onto in life, whether it is our faith, family, or a sense of purpose.
