Originally rising to fame as lead singer in the Christian rock band, Messenger, formed in 2010, he became a favorite during the early auditions of American Idol. Dixon auditioned in the tenth season, along with his sister Schyler, at the Nashville auditions. However, neither of them ended up in the Top 24. After he was sent home, Dixon performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on March 3, 2011.
Dixon returned in season 11, however he did not plan to audition, initially planning to merely accompany his sister Schyler to her audition. The judges implored Dixon to audition as well, where he sang David Cook's "Permanent". Both he and Schyler were awarded golden tickets. Schyler was cut yet again during the Las Vegas round, which brought him to tears.
On February 23, 2012, Dixon was placed in the season 11 Top 25. In the semi-finals, he performed Paramore's "Decode". He was one of the top five male vote getters and advanced into the Top 13.

I feel my whole world shake as You awaken my heart
Only You can resurrect the part of me that's died
Only You can bring us back to life
Black, I watched it all fade to black
Yeah this is where my heart was at
Broken and bleeding
No part of me innocent
I was desperately needing
Someone to follow
Someone to save my soul
I need a hero, I need a hero
I feel You break through the night like a flame in the dark
I feel my whole world shake as You awaken my heart
Only You can resurrect the part of me that's died
Only You can bring us back to life
You showed up in the nick of time
I didn't think I'd survive
Now my heart is beating
You, everything points to You
I could try to save myself but it's no use
Without You I'm sinking
I'm down to zero
With a God-shaped hole
I need a hero, I need a hero
I feel You break through the night like a flame in the dark
I feel my whole world shake as You awaken my heart
Only You can resurrect the part of me that's died
Only You can bring us back to life
Revive me, revive me
Bring us back to life
Bring us back to life
I'm down to zero
With a God-shaped hole
I need a hero, I need a hero
I feel You break through the night like a flame in the dark
I feel my whole world shake as You awaken my heart
Only You can resurrect the part of me that's died
Only You can bring us back to life
Revive me, revive me
Bring us back to life
Bring us back to life
Bring us back to life
The song Back to Life by Colton Dixon is an expression of the artist's deepest feelings of vulnerability and the need for rescue. The song expresses a feeling of being lost and broken, a feeling of emptiness, and a need for someone to come and save. The lyrics describe a moment of total darkness, where everything seems to have faded to black, with a heart that is broken and bleeding. In this darkness, the artist is unable to save himself and is sinking down to zero with a God-shaped hole that only a hero can fill.
The artist then expresses a feeling of being awakened by the “flame in the dark” that breaks through the harshness of the night, and in that moment he feels the whole world shaking. This awareness brings hope and the feeling of being alive again. The artist highlights the importance of being rescued by a hero who can resurrect the part of him that has died and bring him back to life. The rescue and the healing can only come from the supreme being, the life-giver, the only one who can revive him.
In conclusion, “Back to Life” is a song of hope, a song of rescue, and a song of renewal. It is an invitation to those who are lost, broken, and hopeless to reach out to the ultimate hero, the one who can bring life back into every dead part of their soul.
