What It Means
Committed Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't understand it, all these thigns you say make you feel good. And I'm afraid if I don't say it, maybe no one would. Because these words mean so much more to me than any of these things you say makes your life complete. And I'm not going along with these things you say we need, and I won't try to compensate when you don't succeed. I can't overlook it-- your jealous nature and your need to fit in to someone else's lifestyle. You'll latch on, but you know you'll quit. Because what's inside means so much more to me than any of these things you say makes your life complete

Overall Meaning

This song, What It Means by Committed, is about a person who is struggling to communicate with their significant other. The lyrics suggest that the partner is saying things to make themselves feel good, but the singer finds them to be insincere. The singer is afraid to express their true feelings, fearing that no one else will understand. However, the singer values what is inside a person more than material things, status, or other external factors.

The singer acknowledges that their partner has a 'jealous nature' and a deep-seated desire to fit in with others' lifestyles. The singer sees this as a problem, but also realises that it's a part of who their partner is. Even though their partner will 'latch on' to a certain lifestyle, they will eventually abandon it. The singer is therefore not going to try to compensate and pretend everything is okay when their partner falls short of these expectations. Instead, the singer values something deeper – the person's character, their values, and what makes them unique.

Overall, the song is about the importance of communication in a relationship, and valuing sincerity, genuine character, and true connection over superficialities, material things, and fitting in with others.

Hi teacher!
May I ask you the exact wording of your greeting?

Do you say "Hi, dear students!", in which case I don't recognise the pronunciation of the word "dear"?
Do you say "Hi, there students!", in which case I don't recognise the stress of the phrase (I'd expect "Hi there, students!")?

The subtitles say "Hi their students!", which seems to me completely meaningless...

Many thanks in advance.
