The Burning
Corpus Christii Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Burning Sun so high above
Will you ever hurt Me
When I see you, my hands seem to die
If I see you I begin to fall
I am as a rock so cold and dark
When you touch me, I burn inside
For all this ages you've been a god
You represent knowledge and fertility
A fragile kingdom you've constructed
Made of Nature and much more
An obsolete side of torture was born
Star of might you shall fall now
It's time you lay down to sleep

All your work is now finished
Mother Earth in ashes

Overall Meaning

The Burning by Corpus Christii is a song that seems to deal with the inevitable destruction of the world. In the first stanza, the sun is addressed as if it is capable of hurting the singer, but it is quickly revealed that it is only a projection of hurt from the singer. When the singer sees the sun, their hands seem to die and they begin to fall. This reveals a deep-seated fear or anxiety within the singer, who feels as cold and dark as a rock until the sun touches them. The sun is described as a god who represents knowledge and fertility, with a fragile kingdom constructed of nature and more.

However, something has gone wrong, and a side of torture has been born alongside the sun's kingdom. In the second stanza, the sun is addressed as a star of might who is finally falling. It's time for it to lay down to sleep, as all of its work is now finished. This is a bleak and ominous prophecy, followed by the final line "Mother Earth in ashes". This line seems to suggest that the sun's downfall will lead to the end of the world, leaving only destruction and ruin behind.

Overall, The Burning seems to be a meditation on death and the end of things. The sun, usually seen as a symbol of life and hope, is revealed to be fragile and dangerous, capable of causing immense destruction. The imagery is dark and foreboding, and the overall tone is one of despair and resignation.

Sorry but where you took that assumption?!! It`s quite wrong.
At that moment (2001) Corpus had 2 members and live session members. It`s a mistake to ignore Ignis Nox, keys and production.
But it`s an excellent work though
