The band started as a hardcore punk band but later moved towards a slower and blues-tinged heavy metal sound. To date, the band has released ten studio albums, four EPs, one compilation, and one live album. Their first three studio albums―Eye for an Eye (1984), Animosity (1985) and Blind (1991)―attracted the attention of Columbia Records, who signed the band in 1993. Corrosion of Conformity found success with the release of their 1994 fourth studio album, Deliverance, which peaked at number 155 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the hits "Albatross" and "Clean My Wounds". Their 1996 follow-up Wiseblood was also successful, and at the time, it was Corrosion of Conformity's highest-charting album in the United States, peaking at number 104 on the Billboard 200. Their latest album, No Cross No Crown, was released on January 12, 2018 on Nuclear Blast Records, and became the band's first album to enter the Top 100 on the Billboard 200, where it peaked at number 67.
Seven Days
Corrosion of Conformity Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Faded mind youth was old and the years were so unkind
I'm the one I face the change I know that stands before me
Believe in me cause I damn sure don't believe in you
I cannot deny myself my anger and my pride
I cannot deny another lie
Waiting to find another spike right through my hand
World's divide, long ago the memory's still inside
Chances shine, seven days our fears become entwined
Seasons change our time is gone our souls have grown much colder
Believe in me cause I damn sure don't believe in you
"Never again" are words that echo in my mind
Leaving still holds back the tide
Crucified with lies my blood turns into wine
Take a sip before I die
I cannot deny myself my anger and my pride
I cannot deny another lie
Waiting to find another spike right through my hand
I hope I'm killed before I die
Oh, before I
begin to interpret the lyrics, it's essential to understand that lyrical interpretation can have different meanings to different listeners. So, here's an analysis based on one possible interpretation.
"Seven Days" by Corrosion of Conformity seems to be a deeply personal and introspective song. The lyrics reflect a sense of regret, disappointment and feeling of betrayal. The opening lines, "Over time mistakes were few, but I believe they're mine," indicate an acknowledgment of some poor choices made in the past. These poor choices may have resulted from a youth that was "old" before its time and made the years "unkind." The singer seems to be critical of themselves, admitting they are not infallible, acknowledging their part in their disappointments.
The chorus, "I'm the one I face the change I know that stands before me, Believe in me, cause I damn sure don't believe in you," reflects an attitude of self-reliance and determination. The singer appears to be saying they recognize that change is necessary, and it's something they will face alone, without someone they once put their faith in; that faith is now diminished or gone. The lines, "I cannot deny myself my anger and my pride, I cannot deny another lie, waiting to find another spike right through my hand, I hope I'm killed before I die" reflect a sense of frustration and despair. The singer is honest about their emotions and cannot disguise what they feel, even if it is not always rational. The desire to have fate intervene in some way to spare themselves more disappointment or metaphorically using a spike as a symbol of their continuing pain.
In the second verse, "World's divide, long ago, the memory's still inside, chances shine, seven days our fears become entwined, seasons change our time is gone our souls have grown much colder," it appears that time has passed, and the relationship that you once had is gone. It may be a reflection of a love relationship, although this could also apply to a friendship or even a professional alliance. The relationship has deteriorated over time, and the "seven days" have come to mean something more than a week to the singer. Seasons have passed, fears have become intertwined, and things have changed so much that it's as if the person they were connected with has become a stranger.
Overall, this song is a reflection on a relationship that once was valuable but has disintegrated over time. The singer is coming to terms with their feelings, accepting their part in the breakdown of the friendship or partnership, and accepting that change is necessary. The song ends on a somewhat nihilistic note, "Take a sip before I die," which could be interpreted as a desire to experience one more thing before giving up completely.
