The Fly
Cosmo Sheldrake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little Fly,
Thy summer's play
My thoughtless hand
Has brushed away.

Am not I
A fly like thee?
Or art not thou
A man like me?

For I dance
And drink, and sing,
Till some blind hand
Shall brush my wing.

If thought is life
And strength and breath
And the want
Of thought is death;

Then am I
A happy fly,

If I live,
Or if I die.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song "Little Fly, Thy summer's play, My thoughtless hand, Has brushed away," immediately illustrates the fleeting nature of life. The singer, regretful of having taken a life without much thought, uses it as a metaphor for his own life. The lines "Am not I, A fly like thee? Or art not thou, A man like me?" suggest that regardless of differences in species, all living beings are subject to the same fate, highlighting the universality of life.

The following stanza "For I dance, And drink, and sing, Till some blind hand Shall brush my wing," elaborates on the metaphor of the fly as life, with the singer expressing a carefree attitude towards life, enjoying it to the fullest until something out of their control brings it to an end. The final stanza "If thought is life And strength and breath And the want Of thought is death; Then am I A happy fly, If I live, Or if I die," encapsulates the poem's central idea. If life is simply the ability to experience, then regardless of how long it lasts, it is a happy one.

Little fly, thy summers play
My thoughtless hand has brushed a way
Am I not a fly like thee,
Or art thou not a man like me?

For I dance and drink and sing,
'Til some blind hand shall brush my wing
Float is life, and strength in breath,
And the one to fall is death.

Then I am a happy fly,
If I live or if I die.
