A Fine Romance
Count Basie & Joe Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A fine romance with no kisses
A fine romance, my friend, this is
We should be like a couple of hot tomatoes
But you're as cold as yesterday's mashed potatoes

A fine romance--you won't nestle
A fine romance--you won't wrestle
I might as well play bridge with my old maid aunt
I haven't got a chance; this is a fine romance

A fine romance, my good fellow
You take romance, I'll take jello
You're calmer than the seals in the Arctic Ocean
At least they flap their fins to express emotion

A fine romance with no quarrels
With no insults and all morals

I've never mussed the crease in your blue serge pants
I never get the chance this is a fine romance

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "A Fine Romance" by Count Basie and Joe Williams present a humorous and ironic twist on the traditional love song. The first verse sets the tone, declaring that the romance in question is "fine" despite the fact that there are no kisses involved. The second verse amplifies the irony, with lines like "You're as cold as yesterday's mashed potatoes" and "I might as well play bridge with my old maid aunt." The third verse continues in this vein, with the singer suggesting that his partner is more interested in jello than romance, and that he is even calmer than a seal in the Arctic Ocean.

The overall effect is one of wry resignation - the singer acknowledges that this relationship is not what he had hoped for, but he seems to accept it for what it is. The humorous lyrics and upbeat jazz tempo highlight the playful nature of the song and add to the irony of the message. Through these witty lines, the songwriters mock the pretentiousness of traditional love songs of the time and celebrate the humor and imperfection in real relationships.

Bought the LP 60 years ago - still have it, and was lucky to find the CD, as the cracks on the LP were getting louder. Was so fortunate to this orchetsra and Joe performing these songs in 1960 in the London Festivall Hall.
