Nevertheless
Count Basie & Joe Williams Lyrics

When I'd be held under your thumb
I'm like a pawn in your hand
Moved and compelled, at your command
Whether it's for bad or for good
I would never change it if I could
Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong
But nevertheless I'm in love with you
Maybe I'll win, maybe I'll lose
And maybe I'm in for crying the blues
But nevertheless I'm in love with you
Somehow, I know at a glance, the terrible chances I'm taking
Fine at the start, then left with a heart that is breaking
Maybe I'll live a life of regret,
And maybe I'll give much more than I get
But nevertheless, I'm in love with you
In spite of all I could do
I went ahead falling for you
So if I laugh or I cry
I made my bed, that's where I'll lie
For what happens there's no excuse
I put my own head in the noose
The lyrics to Count Basie & Joe Williams's song "Nevertheless" express the complexity of being in love with someone despite knowing that they may not have your best interests at heart. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, as the singer acknowledges that they are at the mercy of their beloved's whims. They accept that they are like a pawn in their partner's hand, and are moved and compelled by them at their command. However, the singer declares that they would not change anything about their situation even if given the chance.
The chorus of the song reflects the mixed feelings the singer has about their relationship. They admit that they may be weak, but also strong, and that they may win or lose, and even cry the blues, but nevertheless they are in love with this person. The following lines highlight the risks involved. Despite knowing that they may be taking terrible chances with their heart, they’re willing to proceed anyways. The singer understands their predicament and vulnerability; they might live a life of regrets, or give much more than what they get, but they’re still in love with this individual.
Overall, "Nevertheless" is a song that speaks to the complexity of love and relationships, and the willingness to choose your own destiny while taking great risks. Perhaps the most important takeaway from the song is that love is not always rational - it can be messy, complicated, and sometimes even painful, but it can also be beautiful, rewarding, and absolutely worthwhile.

I fell in love to this album in 1982. It was a short-lived affair, but the passion was real, and I'll never forget.

Basie has always been part of my life. I saw the Basie Joe Williams concert in the Festival Hall, London in 1957. This was I feel the best Basie band. When I lived in Paris, Basie would give two concerts in the 60s/70s when players as Lockjaw, Marshall Royal left the band. They were still the best, but not as the 1957 band, although Butch Miles really added drive to the band. Once for the second concert Freddie Green didn't play - it was if the half the band was missing.

(Cont'd) The signature time is written all over the melody and lyric. This beauty came alive in 1931 with Harry Ruby doing the melody and Bert Kalmar on incredible lyrics. So glad I was old enough to appreciate this genre.
