Wasteland
Covenant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The wind tried to tell us
We failed to understand
We lost our sense of direction
Drowned in the desert sand
We left home without notice
No landmark to be seen
The ground died beneath us
The landscape was unclean
As we search for oblivion
We forget to remember
The faint memory of home
Far beyond the Wasteland
We drank the poisoned water
Th hear the serpent speak
He told us of a garden
With the treasure that we seek
As we try to discover
The secret deep inside
There is nothing to be found
Only dust in the Wasteland
As we search for oblivion
We forget to remember

The faint memory of home
Far beyond the Wasteland

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Covenant's song "Wasteland" explore themes of loss, desperation, and misguided hope. The opening lines depict the characters as lost, both physically (in the desert sand) and metaphorically (in failing to understand the wind's message or their own sense of direction). Their departure from their original home is sudden and unannounced, leaving them with no clear path forward. The mention of the ground dying beneath them and the landscape being unclean suggests a world that has been ruined or destroyed.

The characters then drink poisoned water in order to hear the serpent's voice, which promises a garden and treasure that they seek. However, this proves to be a false hope, as they find no secret or treasure in their search -- only dust in the wasteland. The repeated refrain of "as we search for oblivion, we forget to remember the faint memory of home" drives home the idea that the characters are desperately seeking a way out of their current situation, but also that they have lost sight of what they once had or who they used to be.

Overall, "Wasteland" is a bleak and haunting meditation on the human experience of being lost and searching for something better. The lyrics suggest a world that has been destroyed or abandoned, leaving the characters with little hope of survival or redemption.

Too bad they left this sound behind over 20 years ago.

TheHitherto their more synth pop stuff is pretty good as well, but I agree that they shouldn't have completely abandoned the electro industrial style
