Sweet Jane
Cowboy Junkies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Anyone who's ever had a heart
Wouldn't turn around and break it
And anyone who's ever played a part
Wouldn't turn around and hate it
Sweet Jane, sweet Jane
Sweet, sweet Jane

You're waiting for Jimmy down in the alley
Waiting there for him to come back home
Waiting down on the corner
And thinking of ways to get back home
Sweet Jane, sweet Jane
Sweet, sweet Jane

Anyone who's ever had a dream
Anyone who's ever played a part
Anyone who's ever been lonely
And anyone who's ever split apart
Sweet Jane, sweet Jane
Sweet, sweet Jane

Heavenly widened roses
Seem to whisper to me when you smile
Heavenly widened roses
Seem to whisper to me when you smile

Sweet Jane
Sweet, sweet Jane

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cowboy Junkies' Sweet Jane seem to be reminiscing about lost love, longing and possibly heartbreak. The song starts off by mentioning how anyone who has ever had their heart broken would never want to break someone else's heart in the same way. The next line seems to be about taking responsibility for one's actions, and anyone who has played a role in someone else's life should not turn back and hate it. The repetition of the phrase "Sweet Jane" after each verse emphasizes the significance of the person or experience being referred to in the lyrics.

The song then shifts to a scene where the singer is waiting for someone named Jimmy down in the alley, possibly waiting for him to come back home. The singer is depicted as being stuck in a situation where they need to find a way back home but cannot do so easily. The feeling of helplessness and the inability to escape is further emphasized in the repetition of the phrase "Sweet Jane."

The next two verses seem to talk about how everyone who has had some experience in life can relate to the same feelings of loneliness and separation. The final two lines of the song are repeated and are about someone's smile, which seems to bring comfort and light to the singer's life, represented by the "heavenly widened roses" whispering to them. Overall, the lyrics of Sweet Jane can be interpreted as a love song, a ballad about heartbreak, or a statement about the human condition.

Had this track on a cassette tape back in Highschool in the 90s. Used to cruz around late at night driving my 1986 Fiero GT, letting my mind wander and contemplating my exit strategy out of the only town I had ever known. Now I would do anything to break back into that youthful existence…back to that same time and place…
