The Trinity Session is perhaps their best known record, recorded live in a single day on a single microphone in a church in Toronto. This album also included a unique cover version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane". Reed reportedly liked the Junkies' version of the song better than his own, and began performing their version in concert.
None of the band's subsequent albums have been hits outside of Canada, although the band has maintained a dedicated following and have continued to have chart hits in their native country. Following their 1998 album Miles from Our Home, Cowboy Junkies were dropped from their major label contract. They have continued to release albums on their own independent label, Latent Records.

And we'll watch the water roll
Take me in your warmth
And you'll fill my empty soul
Come on and take me, take me, take me
Come on and take me, take me, take me
Where the water never run
Take me in your love
And I'll be your lifetime friend
Come on and take me, take me, take me
Come on and take me, take me, take me
Take me to the storm
Where the thunder meets the light
Take me in your gentle arms
And I'll love you through the night
Come on and take me, take me, take me
Come on and take me, take me, take me
The lyrics of Cowboy Junkies' song "Take Me" have a simple message of longing and desire for human connection. The song depicts a feeling of emptiness and a need for someone or something to fill it. The use of natural elements like rivers, oceans, and storms enhances the sense of yearning for something powerful and transformative.
The first verse, "Take me to the river and we'll watch the water roll, take me in your warmth and you'll fill my empty soul," presents the image of two people standing by a river, watching the water flowing by. The singer longs to be taken in by the warmth of the person they are addressing, hoping that this connection will fill the void they feel. The use of water imagery symbolizes the transformative power of love and relationships.
The second verse, "Take me to the ocean where the water never runs, take me in your love and I'll be your lifetime friend," emphasizes the singer's desire for a lifelong relationship, a deep connection that will never run dry. The use of the ocean here is significant, as it represents a vast and expansive entity that contains infinite possibilities, just like a true loving relationship.
In the final verse, "Take me to the storm where the thunder meets the light, take me in your gentle arms and I'll love you through the night," the singer is asking to be taken to a place of intensity where lightning and thunder can be found. The storm symbolizes the emotional experience of a relationship, where there might be ups and downs, but ultimately a place where one can find comfort, security, and love.
Overall, the song "Take Me" is a beautiful and poetic expression of longing for human connection and deep love, set against the natural world. It encapsulates the desire for someone to take us and show us the power of love, and how it can transform us and fill us with joy and meaning.
