Do They Owe Us a Living?
Crass Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fuck the politically minded, here's something I want to say,
About the state of nation, the way it treats us today.
At school they give you shit, drop you in the pit,
You try, you try, you try to get out, but you can't because they've fucked you about.
Then you're a prime example of how they must not be,
This is just a sample of what they've done to you and me.

Do they owe us a living?
Of course they do, of course they do.
Owe us a living?
Of course they do, of course they do.
Owe us a living?
OF COURSE THEY FUCKING DO.

Don't want me anymore, 'cause I threw it on the floor.
Used to call me sweet thing, I'm nobody's plaything,
And now that I am different, 'd love to bust my head,
You'd love to see me cop-out, 'd love to see me dead.

Do they owe us a living?
Of course they do, of course they do.
Owe us a living?
Of course they do, of course they do.
Owe us a living?
OF COURSE THEY FUCKING DO.

The living that is owed to me I'm never going to get,
They've buggered this old world up, up to their necks in dept.
They'd give you a lobotomy for something you ain't done,
They'll make you an epitomy of everything that's wrong.

Do they owe us a living?
Of course they do, of course they do.
Owe us a living?
Of course they do, of course they do.
Owe us a living?
OF COURSE THEY FUCKING DO.

Don't take any notice of what the public think,
They're so hyped up with T.V., they just don't want to think.
They'll use you as a target for demands and for advice,
When you don't want to hear it they'll say you're full of vice.

Do they owe us a living?
Of course they do, of course they do.
Owe us a living?
Of course they do, of course they do.

Owe us a living?
OF COURSE THEY FUCKING DO.

Overall Meaning

The song "Do They Owe Us a Living?" by Crass voices the frustrations of the youth who feel disillusioned by the system and are questioning whether the government owes them a decent living. The song begins by rejecting the politically-minded who have failed to address the state of the nation and the way it treats its citizens. The lyrics illustrate the cruelty of the education system, where students are given a hard time, and when they try to get out, they find themselves trapped in a system that has abandoned them.

The chorus of the song, "Do they owe us a living? Of course, they do, of course, they do," is a call to the government that the people need to be taken care of. The song continues by exposing the hypocrisy of the system that has failed to meet the people's needs. The lyrics express that the government has used its power to undermine the population, taking away their dignity, and making them an epitome of everything that is wrong with society.

In conclusion, Crass's song "Do They Owe Us a Living?" is a critique of the British social system in the 1970s. The song represents a cry for help from oppressed youth who have been neglected and disillusioned. While the song was written over 30 years ago, it still resonates with many people today who feel that their basic needs have not been met by the government.

Your Dad had great taste in Music my friend I’m 56 and got into Crass from their early early days

@dubblbarrlbuttrscotch7011

I heard this at 17 on a mixtape in a busted Toyota riding with a dude named Elliot. Had shudder to think on the same tape, and I was the only dude in the car that liked both. Bless you Elliot, wherever you are, for being cool enough to show your stuff, in a car full of idiots.

Omg exact same for me w/ my mum at home! I must have been like 3 or 4 at the time, it's probably my very first musical memory.

@iedanus

Brings back memories.
19 with a mohawk in the 80s, and living on myself.
In a house without a shower or heating in Dec.
And it was the time of my life.

I did the revival version in australian - late 90s early 200s. I remember in high-school of that era, I was skipping class one day, listening to crass - smoking some green - and the school principle came out to the park, and was motioned for me to leave the group and go talk to her. I thought I was getting done for selling drugs on schoolgrounds or some shit.

but she had behind her back, a pair of tartan pants her own daughter used to wear in the 80s in england and she handed them to me as a gift.

It sticks with me to this day, she didn't care about any of what she was seeing aside from wanting to show one of her more troubled students some love. Fucking amazing. I wore the shit out of those until they literally fell from my legs a couple years later lol

@unsound7777

You can hear it that these people were pissed off.
Anarchy in the UK!
