Someday Never Comes
Creedence Clearwater Revival Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

First thing I remember was asking papa, why
For there were many things I didn't know
And daddy always smiled and took me by the hand
Saying, someday you'll understand

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young
'Cause someday never comes

Well, time and tears went by and I collected dust
For there were many things I didn't know
When daddy went away, he said, try to be a man
And someday you'll understand

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young
'Cause someday never comes

And then one day in April, I wasn't even there
For there were many things I didn't know
A son was born to me Mama held his hand
Sayin' someday you'll understand

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young
'Cause someday never comes
Ooo someday never comes

Think it was September, the year I went away,
For there were many things I didn't know
And still I see him standing, tryin' to be a man
I said, someday you'll understand

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young

'Cause someday never comes
Ooo someday never comes

Overall Meaning

The song "Someday Never Comes" by Creedence Clearwater Revival is a reflection on a father's advice to his son, who doesn't fully understand the significance of the words until years later. The lyricist paints the picture of a young man asking his father about things he doesn't understand, and the father offering simple, if somewhat cryptic, advice that is intended to help his son grow into a man. The father's words that "someday you'll understand" become a recurring theme throughout the song, haunting the singer as he tries to navigate his own path through life.

As he grows older and is faced with challenges and heartache, the singer increasingly understands the wisdom of his father's advice. He realizes that time is precious, and that he needs to learn quickly in order to succeed. However, the refrain of "someday never comes" serves as a poignant reminder that there are some things that can't be learned until much later in life, if ever, and that we often regret taking too much time to learn what we need to know.

In many ways, "Someday Never Comes" is a song about growing up, learning life's lessons, and regret. It's a warning to young people to take their education and their responsibilities seriously, and to not wait too long before taking action. It's also a tribute to the wisdom of parents, who often have more experience and more insight than their children realize.

First thing I remember was askin' papa, "Why?",
For there were many things I didn't know.
And Daddy always smiled; took me by the hand,

Well, time and tears went by and I collected dust,
For there were many things I didn't know.
When Daddy went away, he said, "Try to be a man,
And, Someday you'll understand."

My dad's favorite band.
2 tours in Vietnam, and he did make it home.
But the war eventually got him anyway.
God I miss that man. I can still see this 8 track hanging out of the dash of his old black Torino.
Been 41 years since he passed but when i listen to this disc i swear I can feel him here.

Why you americans always talk about nam. This is ccr, a band who also made anti war songs but also a lot of other music. So why always involve this band with nam. I know that they made their music in the same time period, your country fought overseas. Is that the only reason, please tell me....(" no disrespect meant ")
