The Promise
Crossroad Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Was a fool to think I Loved
Something I wasnโ€™t born to do
And the reason behind it all
Was long before I met you

Well I gotta have it whole
Iโ€™ll never be back around
Lingering all alone
Right where I was found

If the answers so simple

Where will I lie
In the midst of the River
I can see with my eyes
Slowly getting bigger
Iโ€™m a fool for nobody
I promise you
If im wrong if im right
A cycle that goes on
To avoid with all my might
Till somethingโ€™s gone
Iโ€™m a fool for nobody
I promise you

Well donโ€™t you just leave and go back home

Thread is bound to unravel
Water flowing from the cup
They say money is like us in time
It lies but canโ€™t stand up

If you wanna die a good man
Canโ€™t die any time soon
And I know what I am
Just the same as you

If the answers so simple

Where will I lie
In the midst of the River
I can see with my eyes
Slowly getting bigger
Iโ€™m a fool for nobody
I promise you
If im wrong if im right
A cycle that goes on
To avoid with all my might
Till somethingโ€™s gone
Iโ€™m a fool for nobody

I promise you
Well donโ€™t you just leave and go back home

Overall Meaning

"The Promise" by Crossroad is a song that delves into the singer's realization of his own foolishness in pursuing something he was not meant for, and the consequences of his actions. The lyrics suggest that the singer was mistaken in believing he loved something that was not his true calling. He acknowledges that the reason for this misguided pursuit existed long before he met the person he is addressing in the song. The singer expresses a desire to have the whole truth and not be stuck in a state of loneliness and contemplation, where he was initially found.

The song also touches on the theme of searching for answers and meaning in life. The singer questions where he will find himself in the grand scheme of things, using the metaphor of lying in the midst of a river, seeing with his eyes that it is slowly getting bigger. This could symbolize the increasing complexity and challenges he faces in life. Despite his uncertainties, he makes a promise that he is a fool for nobody, suggesting a determination to learn from his mistakes and not be easily swayed or deceived. The song ends with a plea for the person he is addressing not to leave and go back home, possibly indicating a fear of abandonment or a desire for companionship.

I love that Clapton watches Sonny's solo with absolute admiration in his eyes. And rightfully so!

@LloydBraun11

I really love seeing them hug at the end.

Vince Gill said watching Sonny was like algebra. He just couldnโ€™t understand it.

I live in Lafayette and get to see Sonny often. Will see him with Marcia Ball 5/19/22 at Rhythms on the River. Saw him last week at the Festival International de Louisiane here in Lafayette

@nicolasnikopol7946

Clapton said that Sonny was 50 years ahead any guitarist in the world. He IS impressed.

Sonny is a monster with a technique that is just humbling. I found out about Sonny through an Edward Van Halen interview. He was Eddieโ€™s favorite slide player and you can hear how Sonny influenced him on the song โ€œBallot or the Bulletโ€ on the VH III album. So thank you Edward for giving that shine, just like Eric did later with his Crossroad shows. I love how Sonny brings out the fire in Eric on this particular performance. Great players tend to do that to one another and when it happens, itโ€™s so special and rare.
I love these players and will always be inspired by their God given gifts.
I miss you Eddie, you were simply the GOAT and will forever be missed. ๐Ÿ™ ๐ŸŽธ

@Realfi

Whenever I watch these Crossroads clips I gain a lot of respect for Clapton's generosity and humility.

@DH-gg6jx

Landreth is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time and deserves to be named up there among the best! Brilliant pairing on stage this Clapton loves it!

@gavinclelland6488

Agreed, and I'm way too late to the conversation. Clapton has the rep, but Sonny is pretty darn close in ability. Two totally different styles, but it sure works together, one of the best duets I've heard.

@DH-gg6jx

Gavin Clelland never too late! Agree with your comment. Different styles but sonny is a master at what he does. Effortless.
