Us Finns tend to have the best humor in the worst situations. It's truly bizzare at times.

During a training exercise when I served mandatory 9 months, one of my squad mates got wounded from a tree falling on top of him after it got ran down by our tank which we were moving up alongside with.

The first thing he shouted wasn't "medic", instead it was "I don't want to become a fucking nugget! My girlfriend's gonna leave me!"

He's earned the nickname "nugget man" at the garrison.
He's fine, he had a broken leg and was relieved of military service, assigned instead desk work for civilian services for the remainder of the 1 year mandatory service time for civilians (who choose to serve the latter or are physically/mentally unable to serve the army).

Being a medic is possibly the toughest job. Not only do you need absolute knowledge of what you’re doing on top of your fighting skills but also the emotional stress is much higher of having to fight for someone’s life while fearing for your own.

Everyone calls out for you the moment they got hit right during the heat of a firefight, expecting you to rush to their positions.. the very position that was under fire just moments ago… and then to haul them out of there.

I asked my medic in Iraq what drove him. He said knowing he is doing more good than harm is what helped him move past alot of the fear. His brothers relying on him to keep us alive. Then jokingly he says "Well if i let you guys die id be screwed, I need you guys to keep me alive and fight off whatever is shooting at us" lol. Doc Rogers, good guy, saw some serious action with him and he did a damn fine job.

There are kids outside, who had to start fighting in war when they were in their childhood. And then, on the other side of the planet, someone is freacking out, bc you called him with the wrong pronoun ? This cant be the world. Iam just sitting here in my room knowing, that i cant do something about it and i just cant get it into my head. a few years back i was running outside and I stepped on a broken bottle, like the bottom of a bottle that had broken off from the rest, and it was very deep. And i felt no pain, except a strange sensation, I ran on the foot for a good 15 seconds without realizing I had totally messed it up. When I looked at it, it was like huh, because I was seeing muscle and fat but didn't feel pain. The entire time I had that wound there was no pain. But when they put the anesthetic in for the stitches, oh boy did that hurt like something else. Wish someone could explain to me how splitting my foot open didn't hurt, but a needle did

@moonasha You didn't feel pain because of Adrenaline. When you got stitched the adrenaline started to wear off= you started to feel the pain.
Also the guy in the video felt the pain immediately because the bullet likely broke his bones destroying the nerves in his foot, and that hurts like a mf no matter how much adrenaline you got in you body.

These Finns are volunteers not mercenaries, they are there with many other non-Ukrainian soldiers, helping them defend themselves against a ruthless invader who uses convicts and real mercenaries to murder innocent civilians and destroy their country.
All Finnish men undergo military training (sharing the longest European border with Russia and the fact that the same aggressor invaded Finland in 1939 it's not surprising.)
83 years ago Great Britain sent soldiers to fight in a country not their own. So were they mercenaries??
Well here's a history lesson for you,
because you may have overlooked this one small detail in your own countries past.
If the free world and volunteers had helped Austria against a ruthless dictator in 1938, WW2 would not have happened and countless millions of innocent people would not have died. (including Finns)

I haven't been able to understand my fascination with all this combat footage until just recently. War is as bad as it gets, brutal and bloody. Definitely not for the weak. But i think its the warriors that intrigued me the most with how they are part of such devastation and somehow maintain mental ownership of themselves. I know people that lose it over petty things. To be able to fight with hostility and in the same minute become his brothers keeper with conviction.

Very good discipline not panicking when your friend was hit, and resuming your duties instead. I've had a number of scary injuries in my life and even with experience it's hard to not fall into panic, very important to have a level-headed person around, instead of contributing to the panic and disorder.

Nicely dealt with and soo calm. I could not be so calm and I cant imagine the pressure you were under seeing your friend injured in the middle of a firefight with a BMP shooting at you. It might just be a foot but I am sure it hurt like hell. Many of us would squeal like that. As for your car and all the stuff in it, it can be replaced, you cannot be replaced. Great. I read Lunastettu maa by Viljo Saraja and some of the guys, especially the POV man, is just like in the book. I especially like how their culture collides with the others'. They cope with bad events through keeping calm and concentrating on the less important damages while others want to focus on the real problems. As soon as he turned that radio on I remembered one of the first lessons I learned in US Army training in Grafenwoehr Germany in the 90's that you can never let your guard down and think that you are safe even in a support unit and believe you are ok behind the front line . We were training for war fighting, against a US OPFOR/ opposing force playing the enemy firing lasers at each other and wearing laser tag gear . I was in a combat engineer company driving a SEE truck/excavator, we had Humvees, M-113 APC's, big front loaders and even a couple bulldozers on trailers tagging along not too far away. We were about 8 vehicles together I assumed not too close to "the front" . I had not seen any friendly units infantry or tank activity like that in a while. I actually had no clue it was my first time out. It was snowing and was overcast the entire time and I never knew which way was north, south or east and west for 3 weeks I just followed whoever was in front of me. I brought my own compass the next time but that's not the lesson. We pulled off a road and spread out in a circle and I parked next to an old barn. I got out of my truck leaving my rifle inside to stretch legs and was standing in front of my truck not for too long when it seemed like from nowhere two enemy OPFOR "BMP's"(M-113') came at us with .50 cal guns right thru our circle and machine gunned all of us and then they were gone. I can't even really describe how it happened how we didn't hear them now I just remember that they were right in front of us. (OPFOR is always very familiar with the terrain and tricks the home field advantage but so does a real enemy often imagine those poor guys from the Bronx going to Vietnam). So I got "killed" standing next to my truck without a rifle. Embarrassing for sure and what training is for. I never forget thinking about what if you went to a war, all the training going overseas with hopes and expectations and that's what happened to you, your last thoughts of making a big dumb mistake and not even having a weapon or having any chance at all. No doubt things like that happen in wars all the way back throughout history.
I like the Finns. They seem cool and calm all things considered. I hope the fellow hit in the foot is home and stays home and this is all over.

seen a few tele's and gore site videos and there are definitely more intense fights out there with CQB that shows them actually fighting point blank and directly killing people from their POV's (unsure of whether or not the people fighting were ukraine or russian)

I know a lot of the Americans & Brit volunteers are OEF/OIF vets & we're fairly used to that while dealing with people who don't want to fight. So it's actually a lot easier with highly motivated & trained partners.

i personally am not fit to fight and never even held an arms in my hands. but this is such a shame that these guys have to come from their developed countries and fight the ruskies there. mad respect and thanks, no matter why you decided to appear there ( tired of good life, looking for adrenaline, patriotism and defending European values, etc.) , I hope that you get out of that hell hole alive. many Ukrainians fed up with life in their homeland simply cannot do this. But the difference that you guys make cannot be over-estimated, taking out a bunch of their squadmen or tanks/ cars, it will definitely stop their unwelcoming advances. so stay safe !

Watching the guy with a wounded foot made my nuts hurt. I cut off my thumb years ago and remember that pain. Most people will never know that level of pain. It's like a bolt of lightning every minute or so an actual electric charge. I feel ya man.

I cannot imagine how petrifying it is to be there, bullets cracking overhead, the whizz of artillery not knowing if its going to hit next to you. I have utmost respect for these guys, I would be absolutely shitting myself. In all honesty when it comes to combat I think i would be looking for ways to go quickly, rather than risk getting both my legs blown off and dying slowly

@Collin Buckley No, but your mentality changes really fast once you've suffered a serious wound and you're not sure that you'll get out alive. What's important is also not to get trapped. It's so easy to end up surrounded and trapped in towns like the one they were fighting in. You always scout out multiple egress routes and maintain flank security so that in the event of a sudden push by the enemy, you have the ability pull back doing firea-team bounding back to a rally point. In war, you can't always be the hunter. Sometimes whether you like it or not, you go from being the hunter, to becoming the hunted no matter how brave you are unless you are suicidal and have a death wish. A fast moving BMP assault with multiple BMP's and supporting infantry could have easily taken out all of those guys had the Russians pushed hard. That BMP had them completely suppressed.

with artillery and mortars you can guesstimate with some accuracy how close the rounds are landing to you from the sound, i.e you can determine how quickly you need to find cover, It's terrifying but the entire point of going through training is to ensure as many soldiers as possible default back to their training once that life or death fear kicks in both so that you survive and live to see another day and, so you can contributing to whichever of you country's objectives are in the conflict.

the worst part imo is that every combat vet is a casualty, even if they don't suffer any physical injuries the trauma the human mind suffers from the prolonged & repeated exposures to high stress is immense, what makes matters even worse is the lack of desperately needed funds to have the resources needed on hand to help everyone and anyone who wants it.

I know in that in the moment the injured young man does not feel lucky, but hit just an inch or two higher in the ankle he’d of perhaps lost the foot or had a permanent injury. I hope he heals (no pun). You are all amazing to be doing what you do to help keep a free people free.

crazy to think that any wounds or injury to your feet would cause you to lose all mobility in the battlefield. Though, given in this situation, if they were fully backed with armor fighting vehicles and more infantry (and visibility over who is who is out there), I think they were fighting with limitations that were out of their reach. I could understand why more equipment is needed in Ukraine.

As u might be able to deduct if u watch, that i’m in fact crawling and hopping around. In the beginning ngl, i was terrified to cross the open field without any visual cover. Needed some motivation to do it, can say that being the target for bmp’s 30mm and 7.62 for minutes is scary and messes a bit with your thinking+getting shot also has it’s effect on ones performance

Shattered my foot when I was a young man about a mile from the nearest road jumping in a creek. The pain and trying to get out took forever and the help of two other people. I can relate and imagine what that soldier is going through! Wish him all the best.

In case people are not aware, the feet have massive amounts of nerve endings. Trauma can lead to extreme pain intensity and blackouts.
One foot has more nerves than both legs and torso combined. You will feel bolts of pain until you dissociate. This is why Iranian police beat the feet.
Surprised the grenade was attempted as demo, the only hope would be to place it against the object and put heavy stuff in back so gas pushes forwards. Mostly they are useless for this except the old heavy ones.
