I used to work for one of the IT giants as Major Incident Manager for almost a decade. Our company was an IT service provider for other giants who outsourced their IT systems to us, so they've been buying the service and their "IT backbone" was covered by us, so they could focus solely on their business.
I used to cooperate with CSIRT on multiple occasions, as their definition of an incident was quite close to mine, yet different enough for them to have their own "fire crew" and TTPs.
I knew their manager. He was "quite technical savvy" for this beaurocratic function alone, so I think he could have been some incarnation of secondary or tertiary CISO.
Long story short:
I've met him in the hallway: pale, blank gaze, lost some weight. I've asked him what kind of cancer did he get from being constantly overworked, and he stated: "NotPetia...Man, I haven't fucking slept within last 7 months."

Sooo,yeah. The malware spilled over to fuckload of service and industry giants all over the world.
I'm sure we'll never manage to get the exactly numbers when it comes to losses this worm caused.
...on the bright side: It motivated me to do regular backups to NAS and 2 external drives used/connected only for that purpose.

I worked at Mondelez in Europe when this happened. Quite the odd feeling seeing all computers in our office just going black, one after the other. People were shocked. We were all sent home and didnt come back for about a week. Most data was reconstructed from backups and some were lost. I didnt know this started in Ukraine before watching this video.

So there's not just the cost of energy backing everything up daily but you have to pay for the service of collecting and storing the tape drives. Obviously, the project failed,because of socialism and specific kind of people who created it, because they were scared shitless that the computers will be better leaders...both in technical and moral sense.

If the USSR's science,economy and army was actually planned and operated by computers, who could take all the variables in to account, considering the amount of resources they're had, they would be unstoppable by 70s.

And in typical Russian fashion, this cyber war had mass collateral damage, not just civilian but in other countries. And what was it even fought for? To return some prestige to the largest orphan country of the failed USSR.

I am happy i found this podcast I work at a Data Protection and Malware defense software provider we talk to customers all the time about the properway to protect there infrastructure and 9 out of 10 will refuse to build it with all of the recommendation parts. #1 factor is cost the cost of implementing all the software / hardware would have been a fraction of the price they payed to get back up and running. Not to even mention the loss of bussnes cost they incured . I share this with potential clients to give them an idea of why they sound not cut corners.

This whole scenario first happened with Estonia back in 2007 during the Bronze Night riots. I had a family member working in networking at a major government department and attacks directly and indirectly by Russia skyrocketed.. They were working 24/7 and the obvious tactic was to block ALL foreign connections. With a small country that can work well. Everything from banks to newspapers was offline from outside the country. Internally, everything worked well most of the time, with the occasional lag due to DDoS attacks.

Hi, southern neighbour here. We had a few attacks before 2022 too, skyrocketing after that. I was abroad in 2007, so haven't heard about the Bronze Nights, got to look it up. However damage of an effective attack today, especially on Estonia, would be an order of magnitude greater - considering you're now the most digitised country in the world. That'd be hard to say because most hackers here aren't snatched up & forced to do the bidding of the government. If not I'd say it's one of 3 reasons: they're aren't sloppy like the Russians, they aren't as carelessly destructive as the Russians, or they simply don't attack wantonly like the Russians.

If we judge their cyberwars by their conventional wars, the first 2 are most likely true, the 3rd possibly...depending on how you define "national security".

Note that the biggest land grab in Europe since WW2 was the one in Cyprus, where Turkey invaded and grabbed about 50% of the island and still does until today (given your reference at 1:13).
Overall, i would leave out the history info in the intro, since it's a bit more nuanced and requires more time which is not really aligned with the objectives of this channel

Cyprus is only 3500sqmi, Crimea is 10500 sqmi. I'm pretty sure the later is a bigger number, putting the 2014 invasion above that. Russia had occupied >50k sqmi of Ukraine in 2022 at it's peak...but has since lost 2/3 of that because all they really know how to do is mess things up.

I have some suspicions why it's insecure by default. It makes forensics easier, it turns carelessness into a window of opportunity. Companies with capable IT will be able to turn security features on, sure. But if you start making personal devices secure, you make it a lot harder for law enforcement and surveillance. I hope this isn't the case, and I'd hate this if true.

Yeah it doesn’t make sense that backups were affected. You always back up off site every day and the backup for yesterday isn’t touched and can’t be updated by today’s backup. So you’d have 20 versions of the same file, each a separate file that backed up if it was updated. When it comes to backup 21 of that file you delete the 1st version and now have version 2 through 21.

I don't understand why you say the backups were also infected. I'm a retired librarian and we did backups of the whole network, once a week, on multiple disk drives. If there was a fire or something, just buy new computers and load. 1990s

Thru 3 weeks we'd make sets to keep, the next set to library center office, 3rd set to admin building.

I don't understand why companies are building their infrastructure on Windows. The damages of NotPetya alone are higher than the cost of migrating to Linux. And the savings for not paying Microsoft could be a nice addition.

I'm amazed that with all of the nefarious activities that happened in the last few years, that did not originate in Russia, that so many people think this attack came from Russia. Indictments?, it's said that a prosecutor can indict a ham sandwich without too much effort. So why not indict untouchable people who would never show up in court.

I was born in 80, and remember a time no one had a p.c. maybe an Atari 2600 but not a net. Man, those times seem pre-historic because I was like 10 or less and my whole world was like tonka trucks, and taking the training wheels of my 20" bicycle. I didn't have any idea how businesses operated in those days. Really no practical memories of daily operating procedure. I'm practically 45 now🧐🥸, and have no idea how this shizz is done without networks, I mean we are to far removed from a pre-historic time. What a decade to recover without computing, and that would never be the same, be like living on Mars. Buying our music on records at a store?, Wtf is that? an arcade is sophisticated, what. Phone freak with a captain crunch whistle, get the freaq out!

at least now big companies are going to feel forced to invest in a red team of pentesters. wich will make things safer for users . im a pentester and this really made me want to get into cyber defense . i am against war but cyber war is different .

This does show what the danger is for hiding zero day exploits is. If NSA had made these exploits known about when they found them this could not have happened to this degree. I don't blame NSA however they need to weigh these things up.

Seems incredibly stupid to not have off-site, non-connected backups. Not even base images. I hope the beancounters that tried to save a few thousand a year not listening to the geeks remember this next time a sysadmin tries to explain the need for doomsday backups.

Also a tip: for a hr-long vid, maybe don't rephrase almost everything the guest says.
