Born To Lose
Cyclone Temple Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As he yelled out to the sky
As a tear rained from his eye
Oh was I born to lose
Why does the color of someone's skin
Raise the fear that lurks within
That makes men hate as they do

[Bridge:]
Created equal so they say
When this was written
I was property not man
Growing bitter day by day
Battered but proud
I will defy until the end

Take a chance and cross the line
Met with resistance for what's rightfully mine
The strong take from the weak
And the wicked destroy the meek

[Chorus:]
Take a chance and cross the line
Ignorance breeds hatred and hatred is blind
The strong take from the weak
And the wicked destroy the meek
When you're born to lose

Born into a world
Where you're considered one of them
Tell me what can you do
Equality is hypocrisy
Often spoken but seldom used

[Bridge / Chorus]

The pain The pain
Never a day without it
The lies The lies
Never a day I'm not reminded

Buried alive and no one hears you scream
The chains that bind you that no one ever sees

They fear my anger but they don't see my pain
Deep down inside me burns the rage

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Cyclone Temple's "Born To Lose" are about the frustration of being born into a world that judges and discriminates against people based on their race. The first verse questions why someone has to be born into a life of hardship and asks why the color of someone's skin can raise fear in others. The bridge touches on the political and historical context of slavery in the United States, highlighting the fact that despite being born equal, not everyone is treated that way. The singer in the song is growing angry and bitter, but also proud. He refuses to give up and will defy until the end.

The chorus urges listeners to take a chance and cross the line, fighting back against the ignorance and hatred that breed discrimination. The strong take from the weak, and the wicked destroy the meek - but this is not the way it has to be. The singer knows that he was born into a world where he is considered one of "them" - meaning someone who is looked down upon - but he refuses to let that define him. Equality may be spoken about, but it is rarely practiced.

The pain and lies of discrimination are never far from the singer's mind. The chains that bind him are invisible but present, and his anger simmers beneath the surface. He is buried alive by the circumstances of his birth, and no one hears him scream. But through the frustration and anger, there is a sense of determination and defiance that runs through the lyrics.

Miguel Bastida

I am thrasher since childhood and love more stuff that sticks out from the rest like this for example. Nee wave of thrash Sounds all the same. Boring aggressive attutude and no heart. I got a Thrash Band myself and we try to stick out too.
