Mon époque
Cyril Mokaiesh Lyrics

Qu'elle étale sur ces cils
Des pétales à ses lèvres
Elle séduit ses amants
S'abreuve des tendres gens
Qu'elle effrite au couteau
S'enrichit sur le dos
De nos jolis printemps
Mon époque (x4)
Mon époque voit son ciel
Avaler la fumée
De nos sanglots divers
De nos salaires crachés
Qu'elle piétine seins nus
En récitant la peur
Même la mort se couche
Quand elle montre son coeur
Mon époque (x4)
Mon époque ne joue pas
Elle jouit puis basta
En s'payant la bagnole
En matant ses chaussures
Mon époque a le style "freedom business"
Power équitable entre tyrans
Qu'elle fidélise
De remise en remise
En remise en remise
Mon époque (x4)
Et toi dodo dis moi ta journée
Tu veux qu'on s'change les idées
Du coin du lit qu'on r'gard' la nuit tomber
Promis, promis ça va changer
Encore un verre copain
Encore à boire, allez
Qu'on s'envole au plus loin
Craquer de liberté
Qu'on revienne, peut-être
Quand elle prendra congé
Mon époque (x8)
The song "Mon époque" by Cyril Mokaiesh is a commentary on modern society and its many issues. The first verse speaks of how the present era is filled with darkness and how it seems to smear this on the eyelashes of everyone living in it. It is as if the troubles and difficulties of our times have seeped into the very essence of our being, becoming a part of who we are. The singer describes how people, especially those in powerful positions, manipulate those who are vulnerable and take advantage of those who are good-hearted. There is an underlying message of resentment towards these people who profit from the misery of others. The chorus repeats the phrase "Mon époque" four times, reminding us that this generation is the one that must face these issues head-on.
The second verse continues the theme of darkness and pain that is prevalent throughout the song. The singer talks about how the sky itself seems to choke on the smoke of our tears and frustration. People struggle to make ends meet, barely scraping by on measly salaries while the rich keep getting richer. The use of the term "seins nus" (bare-breasted) to describe the singer's actions implies a sense of defiance, as if she is rebelling against societal norms and expectations. She recites her fears with a sense of bravado, almost daring anyone to stand in her way. Even death seems to bow before her when she reveals her true self.
The final verse speaks of the current obsession with luxury and status symbols. The singer is unapologetic in her desire for material possessions and seems to revel in the power they bring. She has embraced the concept of "freedom business," where one can enjoy personal freedom and financial success simultaneously. However, there is a hint of dissatisfaction with this way of life as she repeats the phrase "En remise en remise" (in discount after discount) emphasizing the endless cycle of needing to buy more to feel fulfilled. The song ends with an attempt at connection through conversation, but the final chorus reminds us that these issues will still be waiting for us the next day.
