Lawrence's opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship, and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile which he called his "savage pilgrimage." At the time of his death, his public reputation was that of a pornographer who had wasted his considerable talents. E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, challenged this widely held view, describing him as, "The greatest imaginative novelist of our generation." Later, the influential Cambridge critic F. R. Leavis championed both his artistic integrity and his moral seriousness, placing much of Lawrence's fiction within the canonical "great tradition" of the English novel. Lawrence is now valued by many as a visionary thinker and significant representative of modernism in English literature.

My heart is broke it's true
But we could start again somehow
Show me a new painting
I'll keep my mind from tainting
My hearts pure trust and allow
Sifting through depictions
The contradictions
I want to escape it
But not replace it
I wanna throw it all away
And paint with a new brush
But I ask
myself what is the rush
Oh paint my world anew
My heart is broke it's true
But we could start again somehow
Show me a new painting
I'll keep my mind from tainting
My hearts pure trust and allow
You to paint my world anew
My heart just might pull through
And we could start to plant right now
A seed in our new painting
I'll try to keep from tainting
Our hearts pure trust and allow
I can see it coming
A brand new dawning
Of a sunrise we can see
Painted with out tracing
My heart is racing
Can we paint this canvas and connect
The artist and the brush
But am
I too much in a rush
Oh paint my world anew
My heart is broke it's true
But we could start again somehow
Show me a new painting
I'll keep my mind from tainting
My hearts pure trust and allow
You to paint my world anew
My heart just might pull through
And we could start to plant right now
A seed in our new painting
I'll try to keep from tainting
Our hearts pure trust and allow
I am scared to start again
Maybe I just want a friend
I can see a different ending for this night
I am hopeful for an end
Where I just might feel again
Heartbreak yes but so much more
Without foresight
Oh paint my world anew
My heart is broke it's true
But we could start again somehow
Show me a new painting
I'll keep my mind from tainting
My hearts pure trust and allow
You to paint my world anew
My heart just might pull through
And we could start to plant right now
A seed in our new painting
I'll try to keep from tainting
Our hearts pure trust and allow
D. H. Lawrence's song "Piano" creates a melancholic atmosphere through its lyrics. The singer is a person who has gone through heartbreak, which has affected him deeply, and he is now searching for a new beginning. He seeks a way to escape the pain and begin freshly – with a new painting, painted on the canvas of his life. The singer is aware of the importance of retaining his heart's pure trust and allowing the new painting to take shape in a pristine state, without any tainting or interference from his past experiences. The song tells of the hope of recovery and finding new love.
The first verse of the song, "Oh, paint my world anew / My heart is broke, it's true /But we could start again somehow / Show me a new painting," hints at the singer's desire for a fresh start. He acknowledges his broken heart and the realization that he wants to avoid repeating the past. The second verse describes the singer's desire to escape and throw away his past experiences. However, he cleverly includes the caveat "But not replace it," which indicates that he is not looking for a complete escape but, rather, a new beginning with a different perspective.
Towards the end of the song, the singer reflects on his past experiences and realizes that he is scared to start anew, but he notes that he is hopeful that he might feel alive again. The final verse of the song indicates that the singer is looking for a friend or companion who might help him find that spark he seeks.
In all, the song "Piano" could be interpreted in different ways, depending on the listener's perspective. Still, at its core, it is about starting anew, leaving behind the past, and seeking hope in new beginnings.

For those whose mothers abandoned us, this poem rips our hearts, for one feels the pain it brings when your beloved mom is no longer there.

I agree that the resemblance to Proust is most likely a coincidence because memory-jog is something we all experience. Lawrence was simply expressing, quite beautifully, one method it occurs to him. For Donald Justice it was the snow in Absences. For Dickinson it was defined as Remorse: A Presence of Departed Acts -- At window -- and at Door. For Lawrence, the melody leads only to his mother. Well read.

the poem is called 'sorrow' and (word-count permitting!) is: SORROW WHY does the thin grey strand Floating up from the forgotten Cigarette between my fingers, Why does it trouble me? Ah, you will understand; When I carried my mother downstairs, A few times only, at the beginning Of her soft-foot malady, I should find, for a reprimand To my gaiety, a few long grey hairs On the breast of my coat; and one by one I let them float up the dark chimney.
