The group was acquainted with each through the Minneapolis music scene with some already playing together in another band. With Marino’s lyrical perspective, Dad Bod formed and was an instant success realizing their first single “Rot”. Drawing inspiration from artists such as The Cranberries, the quad adds stabs of shoegaze to Marino's dreamy, dark lullabies.
In July of 2020, Dad Bod released their first EP “Precursor”. A stripped-down, acoustic collection of songs curated during the COVID 2020 Quarantine. Right from the opening “4/9,” Dad Bod reveals a world unto itself - “Marino sings in a forlorn tone as if the ending was inevitable or that all human attachments are fragile,” said Robb Donker Curtius of American Pancake. The multi-dimensional and poetic lyrics have also come to define Dad Bod’s sound. Stay tuned for their full-length album in the near future.

I'm gonna cash in on my final request
I want a sound that's the dirtiest bone
I'm going after Norman Greenbaum's murderous tone
I don't wanna mess with average fuzz
I want a grit that comes from heaven above
And add that tambo now you're playin' my game
He's Norman, straight endorphin, best be sayin' his name
I get Norman's whole idea baby
I got Greenbaum's vibe inside my mind
Just a Hebrew writing one hit gospel wonders with bass like thunder
So stuff your pipe and smoke it
When I go to the place I love best
I'm gonna shred it like it's South by Southwest
And channel Norman on the juiciest licks
That Greenbaum, kerosene bomb, man he lays it on thick
I don't wanna mess with average fuzz
I want a grit that comes from heaven above
And add that tambo now you're playin' my game
He's Norman, straight endorphin, best be sayin' his name
I get Norman's whole idea baby
I got Greenbaum's vibe inside my mind
Just a Hebrew writing one hit gospel wonders with bass like thunder
So stuff your pipe and smoke it
I ain't a sinner
Ain't a beginner
I just wanna make filthy noise with you
When I get to the pearly gates
Gonna look St. Peter in his stupid face
Gonna flex, gonna shout, gonna dodge the entry fee
And say that Greenbaum gasoline bomb wolverine spawn fuckin' sent me
I get Norman's whole idea baby
I got Greenbaum's vibe inside my mind
Just a Hebrew writing one hit gospel wonders with bass like thunder
So stuff your pipe and smoke it
The lyrics to "Spirits" by DAD BOD express a deep admiration for Norman Greenbaum and his unique musical style. The singer begins by stating that when they die, they want their final request to be a sound that is gritty and dirty, inspired by the "murderous tone" of Norman Greenbaum's music. They have a particular affinity for the way Greenbaum incorporates a tambourine into his songs, as it adds to the unique depth and texture.
The song also emphasizes the singer's understanding of Greenbaum's musical vision. They appreciate Greenbaum's ability to create gospel-inspired hits with powerful bass lines that make a lasting impact. The singer sees themselves as a Hebrew artist following in Greenbaum's footsteps, seeking to make similar one-hit wonders that capture the essence of their musical inspiration.
The lyrics also convey a rebellious spirit as the singer rejects mediocrity and seeks to create something extraordinary. They want their music to have a raw and heavenly grit that sets it apart from the average fuzz. In the end, the singer declares that they don't want to fit into any mold or follow conventional rules. They embrace their unique style and assertively proclaim their intention to make their mark in the music world using Greenbaum's influence as their guiding light.
Overall, "Spirits" pays homage to Norman Greenbaum and his musical legacy while asserting the singer's desire to create something exceptional and leave a lasting impression through their own artistry.
