The three met while they were young men at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. They formed the band dc Talk (a reference to Washington D.C., but later marketed as 'decent Christian talk' by their label) and, as of the year 2000, spent twelve solid years together, performing all over the world, recording 6 albums, and earning many awards, including 4 Grammy awards.
Their music, aimed at a younger audience, combined hip-hop, rap, and R&B sensibilities and filled a gap in 1980s Christian Music and gave them a unique niche. Their first three albums, DC Talk, Nu Thang, and Free at Last started from their rap/hip-hop roots but increasingly included melodic vocal rock influences. Their 1995 studio album, Jesus Freak, continued this musical evolution by eshewing almost all rap elements and adopting a harder modern rock/grunge sound on many songs, especially the title track. Their most recent studio album, Supernatural, draws on their previous efforts while moving towards mainstream pop stylings.
Their signature sound in all albums is their use of the three members' different vocal skills separately and together. They are often lauded for their lyrical sophistication, addressing many themes in Christian theology, faith, and practice.
After more than ten years together as a group, they are taking a break in recording together to pursue their own activities outside of the band, and launch solo careers in recording music. Michael Tait formed his own band, Tait, and has most recently served as the frontman for Newsboys. Toby McKeehan has released music under the name Tobymac, and has been the most sucessful of the three. Kevin Max has released two solo albums of his own.

[1, 2, 3, funky]
[True MC, True MC]
[Everybody listens to the True MC]
True MC, no slack on the track
Here to tell the people that love's what we lack
In this family we gotta love like Christ
Brother to brother we need to learn to love each other
So lean on me when you're in trouble
I cast my cares on Christ 'cause He cares for me
So when you need a shoulder to cry on, just lean
[Props to my man speedy, 1, 2, 3]
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long 'til
I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have sorrows
But, if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long 'til
I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
Please, swallow your pride
If I have things that you need to borrow
For, no one can fill those of your needs
If you won't let them show
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long 'til
I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
You just call on your brother when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have some problems that you'd understand
We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long 'til
I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
Make it funky, make it funky
Make it funky, make it funky
Make it funky, make it funky
Cause I'm housin' this joint
Like a brother with an attitude
And comin' straight so you best give me latitude
Leanin' on my boys from the word get go
And bein' there for them cause the Lord said so
Many of us just don't know what to do
Well take it here and now from the boy named true
Don't dog a brother out when he stumbles and falls
Just be there to lean on y'all
Call me, call me, just call me,
Call me, call me, just call me, lean on me
Don't you know that I'll be there, you can lean on me
Don't you know that I'll be there, you can lean on me
Don't you know that I'll be there, you can lean on me
"Lean On Me" by DC Talk is a song about the importance of love, support, and brotherhood in troubled times. The lyrics, which use religious imagery to communicate a message of fellowship, encourage listeners to turn to God and to one another for help when faced with adversity. The first verse speaks to the need for brotherly love, invoking Christ's example as a model for how the "family" of humanity should treat one another. The chorus itself is a message of hope, emphasizing the need for mutual support when facing difficulty: "Lean on me, when you're not strong / And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on."
The second verse expands on this theme, acknowledging that everyone experiences pain and sorrow in life, but that we can find strength in the knowledge that tomorrow is another day. The final verse encourages listeners to put aside pride and to be there for one another, regardless of their circumstances: "You just call on your brother when you need a hand / We all need somebody to lean on." The song's driving beat and chorus make it an uplifting anthem of friendship and mutual support, a testament to the power of love and brotherhood in difficult times.
