Thank God I'm A Country Boy
DENVER JOHN Lyrics

Well life on the farm is kinda laid back
Ain't much an old country boy like me can't hack
It's early to rise, early in the sack
Thank God I'm a country boy

Well a simple kinda life never did me no harm
A raisin' me a family and workin' on a farm
My days are all filled with an easy country charm
Thank God I'm a country boy

Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ole fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy

When the work's all done and the sun's settlin' low
I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow
The kids are asleep so I keep it kinda low
Thank God I'm a country boy

I'd play Sally Goodin all day if I could
But the Lord and my wife wouldn't take it very good
So I fiddle when I can, work when I should
Thank God I'm a country boy

Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ole fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy

Well I wouldn't trade my life for diamonds and jewels
I never was one of them money hungry fools
I'd rather have my fiddle and my farmin' tools
Thank God I'm a country boy

Yeah, city folk drivin' in a black limousine
A lotta sad people thinkin' that's mighty keen
Son, let me tell ya now exactly what I mean
Thank God I'm a country boy

Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ole fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy

Well, my fiddle was my daddy's till the day he died
And he took me by the hand and held me close to his side
Said, "Live a good life and play the fiddle with pride
And thank God you're a country boy

My daddy taught me young how to hunt and how to whittle
Taught me how to work and play a tune on the fiddle
Taught me how to love and how to give just a little
Thank God I'm a country boy

Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ole fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle

Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy

Overall Meaning

In "Thank God I'm a Country Boy," John Denver celebrates the rural life and the joys of being a country boy. The first stanza highlights the simplicity of life on the farm, where waking up early and working hard are the norm. However, Denver views this as a blessing, as he can handle anything that comes his way. The second stanza further emphasizes the charm of country life, where raising a family and living a simple life are rewarding enough.

The third stanza introduces Denver's love for music, as he mentions his "ole fiddle." He enjoys playing music and entertaining his family, even if his playing can't be too loud to wake up the kids. In the next stanza, Denver expresses his desire to play music all day long, but understands that he has other responsibilities and can't just play fiddle all the time.

In the final two stanzas, Denver gives a nod to his father, who taught him how to hunt, work hard, and play fiddle. He expresses his gratitude for his simple country life and the joys it brings him, highlighting that he would never trade it for the "diamonds and jewels" of city life.

My taste in music does NOT normally venture into Country, but John Denver is the exception - his music transcends a simple description as that. He was incredibly talented. The man had rhythm that a lot of modern "artists" would give their right arm for!

Jay Bee

He was more and amalgam of country, folk and pop…but his awesomeness is unquestioned!

Clark B

A lot of modern country sounds especially crap... ;D

Benjamin Williams

I think that you would love Bread as well. John Denver and David Gates aren't strictly country. They fit more into the genre of Soft Rock. Bright, soothing and optimistic songs like Make It With You and Baby I'm-A Want You are classics

Danny Smith

I’ve only just found country music I love it now I wish I’d of found it a lot sooner

As someone who is not a country boy in the slightest (I’m California boy), this song is undeniably amazing. And it sounds like it would’ve been incredible to hear live with country people.

Erich

I’m from Saskatchewan, farming province play this on the combine all the time.

Dude, we just chill brother. Takes us 20 minutes to get anywhere we need. Everyone has a yard and a front porch. Everyone waves at one another. People don't lock their doors sometimes. It's about living slow, enjoying life, being kind to those around you....You're a country boy at heart, you were just born in Cali bro.

@Erich Reminds of Son In Law when Pauly Shore took the combine out lol. You can tell real country boys from fakes easy. You did here. You said "combine" and not "harvester." lol Combine=Country Boy Harvester=Not So Country Boy

2023 kinda sucks not gonna lie
