The Queens native built his reputation with street-level mixtapes and quickly became one of the city's leading DJs, graced with the latest tracks by the biggest names. Popular New York hip-hop station Hot 97 brought him aboard for a while in the late '90s alongside fellow DJ heavyweight Funkmaster Flex. The air time furthered his reputation, and Jay-Z in turn invited him to join forces with Roc-a-Fella, which released Clue?'s major-label debut, The Professional (1997). The album featured primarily exclusive tracks, each boasting one of New York's top rappers, everyone from Nas and Mobb Deep to DMX and Ja Rule.
A second volume followed in 2000, and in the meantime Clue? toured with Roc-a-Fella in support of Jay-Z's Hard Knock Life album as documented on Backstage (2000). He then parted ways with Roc-a-Fella and embarked on his own path, establishing Desert Storm Records and debuting Fabolous in 2001. Years later, once Jay-Z ascended to the position of president of Def Jam, Clue? recorded The Professional, Pt. 3 (2006).

I rob for, can't see me workin' for Job Corps
It's Gates, dog a little introduction to me
Crack's D unto himself who else fuckin' with me?
Who got the shit in a chokehold? Who gettin' that powder?
Who got the candy red 'Pala, sittin' with M. Holla?
It's real life and I ain't got to act in a flick
Young 'n I like the 5, but feel right in the 6
Its more roomy, so I can feel right in your bitch
Shit, I drink Velvey, Henny, and Cris
In the hood they call me 'Can't-get-right'
But I can get right
It ain't a ho in Harlem that can't get piped or any five boroughs
My 9 semi starts trouble, I want y'all to act up
Go head and play dumb Billy Bathgates my name, huh
Nigga, I shot ya
Yeah, DJ Clue, Desert Storm, fat shout
My nigga Just Blaze, Enigma
In the song "Bathgate Freestyle" by DJ Clue and Bathgate, Bathgate talks about his experience as a drug dealer and his ambition to make a lot of money. He talks about how he wants to make a million dollars from selling fifteen bricks of drugs. Bathgate is confident in his skills as a dealer and believes that he is better off robbing than working for Job Corps, which is a government-funded job training program for young people.
Bathgate introduces himself to the listener, describing himself as a person who is in control of his life and is not afraid to take risks. He refers to himself as Crack's D unto himself, meaning that he is at the top of the drug dealing game and has no one else to compete with. Bathgate boasts about his ability to hold onto a large amount of drugs and how he is in possession of a candy red 'Pala, sitting with M. Holla.
Bathgate talks about his love for luxury and how he enjoys drinking expensive liquor like Velvey, Henny, and Cris. He also mentions his reputation in the hood as 'Can't-get-right,' but is quick to point out that he can 'get right' when he needs to. Bathgate is a force to be reckoned with and warns others to be careful around him as his semi-automatic gun can start trouble.
