Backing up an iOS or iPadOS device can be done with an iCloud backup.

While you can store files in iCloud from your Mac, complete backups for macOS would be completed with Time Machine.

Please note that the external USB-disk will be erased when used as a Time Machine backup device. So if you have important data on the USB-disk, don't use it for Time Machine.

After the initial backup, what does Time Machine do for the next back up? Does it create a new back up of the entire hard drive or does it update the previous backup only with the changes made since the last back up?

That’s a great question! After that first backup, Time Machine backs up “only the files that changed since the previous backup”. This means that future backups will be completed much more quickly than the initial one and they will not require as much space either. I found out, there is a way. Just use Disk Utility to create an additional APFS volume on the disk.

Thanks for the video. I am having trouble keeping my Mac seeing the backup drive after the initial setup. Why does my Mac keep forgetting my SSD external (dedicated not partitioned) backup drive? It completes the initial backup of around 2TB of data onto a 4TB drive which takes around 4-6 hours and then does hourly backups for roughly a day before the SSD drive disappears from the desktop and cannot be seen anywhere apart from in the Mac software 'Disk Utility' where I have to erase and reformat the drive all over again so that macOS Venture (13.3.1 (a) can see the drive on the desktop again.

Let us know when you fix the bug in Ventura where time machine won’t delete previous backups, and informs you the back up drive is too full. The back up drive is double the capacity of the SSD. Yes I tried restarting.

Should the SSD drive remain connected to the device to keep the data up to date? What if the SSD driver was not connected for 2 weeks for example, does TimeMachine prompt the user to select date accordingly?

formatted an external disk as macos extended journal. plugged it into an airport extreme (5th Gen). Time Machine does not see the drive. Airport Utility sees the drive. Finder sees the drive.

Does macOS format my external HDD to APFS (Encrypted) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) automatically if I intend to encrypt my Time Machine backup? Which one would that be?

If you plan to encrypt your Time Machine backups, APFS Encrypted disks are the preferred format, but Time Machine still supports MacOS Extended (Journaled/Encrypted). It won’t automatically assign the format, you will have to choose from a list of formats.

Apple I got a question I got my first Mac last month and have been curious about time machine I have a lot of storage on this Mac and I searched through Youtube and they said if you don't have an external storage device you can open the Disk Utility and create a new Volume and use it to add a Backup so if I don't have an External storage device and have a lot of storage do you recommend for the people without an external storage device to maybe add a new Volume for backups?

I can't find a way to use Time Machine to back up 2 drives: 1) the HD to an external HD and 2) backup a 2nd external HD to a 3rd external HD . It doesn't seem to be possible because there is only one global exclude list that is used for all Time Machine backups.

Had this setup and working fine for a few months. Then suddenly Time Machine kept giving me the error "Time Machine couldn't back up to "Time Machine".", yes I named the backup drive "Time Machine". Is that suddenly the problem? Worked fine with that name for months. Now I can't use Time Machine to back up my Mac and I'm unsure why. I've even tried erasing the external drive a few times in various formats to no avail.

Does using this option earse the data from the drive? When I tried to do the same, it didn't notify me of any such warning and showed me the count down itself. I wasn't sure so stopped the process altogether. since the data in my drive is precious.

@Apple Support I think you misunderstood my question. I am talking about my external drive’s data. If I choose to backup my mac, will it then in erase my external drive’s data then do the backup. Because I have some data in my external drive but would also like to use it for back up purposes.

@Darshan Mehta it will revert to the backup so if it backed up saved 2 weeks ago it will snapshot back to 2 weeks ago so anything added between won't be backed up. hence time machine. your going back before a error or hard drive failure

I never use Time Machine, because I don’t know how it’s working.
Can I take my files from TM’s-backup on any Windows Device through the using of password?
What if my Mac will die, then I need to restore my files on any computer like Windows (because it’s everywhere and it’s cheaper if I should buy a new device then Mac).
So I need a universal and multiplatform solution.

If the backup cannot be opened with a password on a Windows or Linux computer, then I will not use Time Machine, because the ability to access my files in the backup anytime and anywhere is more important to me than the ecosystem of a particular manufacturer.

Lots of unnecessary extra steps. Back in Leopard, when Time Machine was introduced, all you had to do was plug the drive in, click "Ok" and that was it.
