Warning Call
DJ Shadow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is the greatest thing you're ever likely to achieve in your life
Holding up the medals you've won while everyone else is swimming in circles
Working out what happened to everything you learned in school
You don't remember them telling you that it's cool to be you

It's cool to be you when you like what you do and your strong and strong
I'm saying, just saying this is a warning call, a warning call
I want to go home I've said too much and I've said it all
It breathed all on its own, its own
There's nothing more to be done so pack up your shows of bitterness
There's a time for heroes and it's not now

It is the greatest thing you're ever likely to achieve in your life
It is the greatest thing you're ever likely to achieve in your life
I know how to find out everything about you
I know how to find out everything about you

Well, it's cool to be you when you like what you do and your strong and strong

I'm saying, just saying this is a warning call, a warning call
A warning call, a warning call, a warning call, a warning call

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to DJ Shadow's "Warning Call" speak to the idea of individual achievement and self-acceptance in the face of societal pressure. The opening lines speak directly to the listener, stating that what they are currently doing is the greatest achievement they will ever have in life. This can be interpreted as a call to action, urging the listener to live their life to the fullest and reach for greatness in their own unique way. The following lines criticize the idea of conformity, stating that while others are "swimming in circles," the listener is holding up their own medals of achievement.

The next verse speaks to the feeling of lost potential, questioning what happened to everything learned in school and implying that the listener has more to offer than what society may have deemed acceptable. The chorus reaffirms that it is "cool" to be oneself and to embrace one's strengths, even in the face of warning calls from others. The repetition of the phrase "a warning call" can be seen as a symbol of the pressure to conform to societal norms.

The final verse can be seen as a warning against holding onto bitterness and negativity, urging the listener to focus on positivity and heroism in their own life. Overall, the lyrics of "Warning Call" encourage the listener to strive for individuality and embrace their own unique path, rather than conforming to societal expectations.

The thing with Shadow is this: by each new album he does something that is not cool, or understood, by mainstream for years. The man just is ahead of his time.

PART 2: ...what happed is our brain are flexible too, and get reconfigured by ALL the new song we CHOSE to listen, the cells connect a new way, and the artist introduces us in a new musical space, and enhance our taste! If you had to listen only the things that sounded great first hearing, you would love a tenth of what you love, especially with guys like DJ Shadow, whose musical taste, craft and knowledge is far beyond...everyone...ENJOY!

I really like this track, probably one of my favourites from The Less You Know, The Better. Kind of reminds me of Bloc Party. The rock inspired tracks are a welcome addition to the album in my opinion. I loved Endtroducing, but if shadow didn't keep mixing it up people would complain that his sound was becoming too repetitive. After all, it was through experimenting with new sounds and styles that made Endtroducing such a great album in the first place...
