Dim
Dada Banks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you've got a picture of your face
Could you leave it on your way out the door
I don't care if it's color or black or white
I just need something to remember you by

Oh, before my life went dim
Oh, before my life went dim
No one told me the trouble I was in
Before my life went dim

I painted half my face green
Don't you know I painted half my face blue
In hopes of showing you
Both sides of me, both sides of me
I guess it came down to
Don't you love me, don't you love me

Oh, before my life went dim
Before my life went dim
No one told me the trouble I was in
Before my life went dim

Can't this car go any faster
Can't this car go any faster
Can't this car go any faster
Faster, faster
Can't this car go cause I can still see where I am

Oh, before my life went dim
Oh, before my life
Before my life went dim
You should have told me

The trouble I was in
Before my life went dim

Overall Meaning

In the opening lines of the song 'Dim' by Dada Banks, the singer requests for a picture of their lover's face to hold onto as a memory. They don't seem to care about the color or black and white of the picture, as long as they have something to remember them by. As the song progresses, the chorus highlights the fact that the singer's life has lost its brightness ('before my life went dim'). They sing about the troubles they faced before this dimming of their life, reminding someone that they should have warned them. The second verse describes how they painted half their face green and half blue, with hopes of showing their lover both sides of them, and then questioning their lover's love for them.

The pre-chorus 'can't this car go any faster' repeated thrice, is almost like a cry for help, the singer wishing to escape from their present situation. However, the last line is sobering, 'cause I can still see where I am', as if the problem lies not outside but within the singer. It is a metaphor for how we often try to run from our problems but they chase us wherever we go, never allowing us to escape. In conclusion, the song 'Dim' seems to be a lamentation of the loss of brightness in someone's life and the regret of not being able to do anything to stop it.

Sitting at home and out of nowhere, this refrain pops into my head. Haven't thought of this in at least 24 years. Had to listen again!

@trashywilma

One of those songs you don't hear for a decade and then wonder how you ever forgot.

@mcgiver1327

Time for that once a decade listen!

I'm 45, sitting at a bonfire in my back yard, it's August 31st at 9pm, and I'm cruising down memory lane right now. Disneyland Rock song got me here....❤

@LordOfCrabz

DIZZ KNEE LAND!!!
For people wondering, that (was) a popular name for prison especially in the West Coast area.
It's 2023 and I've recently become obsessed with this band! Amazing!

@kevindigo22

You mean they weren't really singing about going to Disneyland? I don't pay much attention to what song lyrics mean so maybe I had it wrong all these years.

@LordOfCrabz

@@kevindigo22 I understand!I had to do research too cause I was like "Drunk Driving and they're taking you on a vacation to a theme park?!".

Dada are the most unjustly underrated rock band since 1992 - and arguably the greatest band of the 1990s. All their four 90s albums are great records. Having said that nothing will top their '92 debut 'Puzzle', a perfect record, all tunes are great, some are modern classics (like this one) there isn't a single 'average' song on it. The Real 'Ten'.

@Sebadoh75

Agreed!

@TyrannosaurusMarx

The real "ten" is "Ten".
