Daft Wader
Damon Albarn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Farewell martyr
Whipping flame
We will put up our red flags and cry

In bright colored plastic chairs
Beneath the towers, catching the higher airs
Then light up bonfires for you
Oh, crossdressers
Crossdressers of these terrible roads
Your love is great
And the nasalar
In his beaten up old car
Is taking the particles back home again

Soon (you'll be dancing)
You'll be dancing

Where the made up gods have set their clocks on you
And the rockets we let off are hidden now beneath the snow

Overall Meaning

In the song "Daft Wader" by Damon Albarn, the opening lyrics "Farewell martyr, whipping flame, we will put up our red flags and cry" evoke a sense of farewell and tribute to a fallen hero or a symbolic figure. The use of "whipping flame" suggests intensity and passion, while the image of red flags being raised signifies solidarity and mourning for the martyr. These lines set a solemn and poignant tone for the rest of the song, hinting at themes of sacrifice and remembrance.

The following verse paints a vivid scene of people gathered in a communal space, depicted as "bright colored plastic chairs beneath the towers, catching the higher airs." This imagery conveys a sense of urban modernity and communal gathering, perhaps in a public square or plaza. The act of "lighting up bonfires for you" suggests a ritualistic or ceremonial gesture, possibly in honor of the departed martyr or as a form of celebration and commemoration.

The reference to "crossdressers of these terrible roads" introduces a metaphorical element, likening individuals navigating difficult paths or challenges to crossdressers. This imagery could imply a sense of resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. The mention of the "nasalar in his beaten up old car" adds a layer of specificity and character to the narrative, depicting a particular individual or archetype in transit, returning home with particles of experience and memory.

The final lines of the song bring a shift in tone, suggesting a sense of liberation or transcendence as the lyrics proclaim, "Soon you'll be dancing where the made-up gods have set their clocks on you." This image of dancing in a realm where conventional notions of time and authority are subverted speaks to a sense of defiance and freedom. The mention of "rockets we let off hidden now beneath the snow" hints at past actions or aspirations that are now buried or obscured, adding a layer of mystery and reflection to the lyrics. Overall, "Daft Wader" conveys a rich tapestry of themes, from loss and resilience to celebration and transcendence, inviting listeners to interpret and engage with its evocative imagery and storytelling.

Thanks for the lyrics, I couldn't quite make out..
Although- even though I've looked at other lyrics & they all say a similar thing...
I'd just like to make a few amendments.
#Oh cross dressers
Cross dressers of these terrible realms, who loves this great#
This 'great' man the cross dressers mourn, was a cross dresser himself in life.
Also nasalar is a strange one!
It seems to relate to the nose, this certain
'cross dresser' had a massive Cocaine addiction.
The made up gods have set their clocks on you.
This cross dresser was ruled by Saturn. 🪐
Greek equivalent Cronus.
God of time. ⏳

I think it's brilliant to put this song before darkness to light, feel the melancholy theme

I agree. I really love Daft Wader. Also with Combustion before, then woven in a little at the end of Daft Wader. Then Darkness to Light, which makes my spirit soar. Currently those 3 are my favourite part of the album. I'm still listening at least once a day since release. Thought I'd reach saturation point by now but no. Love it more with each listen ❤❤❤
