His distinctive voice and finger-picking guitar style has taken him across the UK and USA playing to a multitude of people, all the while never forgetting his roots. Wilde is currently in full swing promoting his debut album ‘This is The Place’ an exploration of distinctly English folk-pop but finds time to chat with us about growing up in the North, his influences and what we can expect from him in 2011
This Is The Place is the debut album from Blackpool-based singer-songwriter Dan Wilde and it's a pretty impressive place to start.
The opener, Nearest I Have To A Home', marries a memorable tune to a fine lyrics, which is the definition of a good song, and it's followed by Broke My Heart Alright' featuring an exuberant fiddle somewhat at odds with the sentiment of the song. Nevertheless, it works. These two tracks feature a full band and give Dan's voice an opportunity to soar. Elsewhere there is just voice and guitar or combinations of instruments including banjo, mandolin and ukelele.
Lyrically, the album explores themes of loss and confusion and can sometimes seem naive to the world weary ear. Others would call it honest. The arrangements, by a small cast of supporting musicians, are excellent and Dan's voice is strong and full of character - there is even a hint of the young Paul Simon about him. Listen to 'Be Gone' and you'll hear it. Dan Wilde is a name we'll be hearing a lot more of.
Looking Out

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This party is all over and there's no one here we know
Are we lost? Well I think the answer's yes
The streets are all the same here so we're gonna have to guess
And I'm still looking out, still looking out for a sign
I'm still hoping you, still hoping you will be mine
We're going round in circles and we've had too much to drink
I can't wait to get you to your door
I'm wanting you to kiss me, but wouldn't ask for more
I'm still looking out, still looking out for a sign
I'm still hoping you, still hoping you will be mine
I'm still looking out, still looking out for a sign
I'm still hoping you, still hoping you will be mine
The song "Looking Out" by Dan Wilde seems to describe a situation where a couple, who are at a party, are ready to head home. They are lost and trying to navigate their way through an unfamiliar street. The lyrics convey a sense of uncertainty and longing as the singer hopes that his partner will reciprocate his feelings. He is looking out for a sign, a confirmation that their connection is more than just the result of drunkenness at a party. The repetition of the chorus reminds the listener that the singer is still hoping for a sign, still hoping that his love interest will be his.
The first verse presents a familiar scenario where a couple leaves a party, but the second verse alludes to the possibility of a romantic relationship between the two. The lyrics "I'm wanting you to kiss me, but wouldn't ask for more" hints that there's a deeper connection between the two characters. The final chorus suggests that the singer is still hopeful that something more substantial will come out of their encounter. He could just be eager for a romantic relationship, but the song's ambiguity enhances its allure, as the audience can interpret the lyrics differently.
Overall, the song is an insightful and introspective exploration of relationships, longing, and hope. The lyrics are well-written and convey a sense of vulnerability that adds to the emotions expressed in the song.
