Darkthrone has been a duo of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto since guitarist Zephyrous left the band in 1993. They have sought to remain outside the music mainstream. From 2006, their music strayed from the traditional black metal style and incorporated more elements of traditional heavy metal, punk, and speed metal, while more recent albums have also included doom metal.

Duke of Gloat
Darkthrone Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The well you encountered as a child
Merely acknowledging the beacon now
And now you are not well any longer
So this is the pact of the gloat
Double hell for all
All to repair and one to watch
Hail the satan
Sinister duke of gloat
Wrap up the wretched fates
Intriguing eternal laughter
Encyclopedias
Of endless futile life toils
Shrapnel wounds
From shattered inner gargoyles
So this is the pact of the gloat
Brave beating hearts, But
All must repair while one beholds
No freedom in these domains
The lyrics of Darkthrone's song "Duke of Gloat" delve into themes of maturity, self-realization, suffering, and the lack of freedom within certain domains. The first verse speaks to the singer's realization that they are too old to learn from their master and that they have encountered a well of knowledge in their childhood. However, now that they can acknowledge the beacon of wisdom, they find themselves no longer well or in good health. This could suggest that the knowledge and understanding they have gained has come at a cost to their well-being.
In the chorus, the "pact of the gloat" is introduced. It refers to a twisted agreement which results in "double hell for all." This implies that everyone involved in this pact will experience intense suffering or torment. One person is designated as the observer or watcher while the rest must bear the weight of repairing whatever needs to be fixed. The mention of "no freedom in these domains" suggests that the individuals bound by this pact have no escape or autonomy within their designated roles.
The lyrics shift focus to the Duke of Gloat, who is hailed and identified as the sinister embodiment of Satan. This figure is responsible for wrapping up the fates of the wretched, implying that he has control over their destinies. The mention of "intriguing eternal laughter" suggests a sadistic enjoyment derived from the suffering of others, further emphasizing the dark nature of the Duke of Gloat.
The verse that follows alludes to encyclopedias representing the vast knowledge of futile life toils. It suggests that despite accumulating an extensive understanding of life's hardships, these experiences only cause further wounds, symbolized by shrapnel wounds from shattered inner gargoyles. This imagery conveys a sense of internal turmoil and damage caused by the constant exposure to the harsh realities of life.
The final chorus reaffirms the pact of the gloat, emphasizing that even though the hearts of those involved may be brave, everyone must still bear the burden of repair. One individual watches while the others work, implying a lack of rest and constant vigilance. The repetition of "no freedom in these domains" reinforces the notion that those trapped within this pact have no escape, further emphasizing their entrapment and lack of agency.
Overall, the lyrics of "Duke of Gloat" examine the consequences of seeking knowledge and understanding, highlighting the toll it can take on one's well-being. They also explore the themes of suffering, control, and the absence of freedom within certain domains.
