September
Daughtry Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And all those days we spent out by the lake
Has it all gone to waste? All the promises we made
One by one they vanish just the same
Of all the things I still remember
Summer's never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
In the middle of September we'd still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could've been
It was worth it in the end
Now it all seems so clear, there's nothing left to fear
So we made our way by finding what was real
Now the days are so long that summer's moving on
We reach for something that's already gone, yeah
Of all the things I still remember
Summer's never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain
In the middle of September we'd still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could've been
It was worth it in the end
Yeah, we knew we had to leave this town (we knew we had to leave this town)
But we never knew when and we never knew how (we never knew how)
We would end up here the way we are
Yeah, we knew we had to leave this town (we knew we had to leave this town)
But we never knew when and we never knew how (we never knew how)
Of all the things I still remember
Summer's never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain
In the middle of September we'd still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could've been
It was worth it in the end
Daughtry's "September" is a reflective song about the nostalgia that comes with growing up and moving on from cherished memories. The opening verse speaks of the passing of time and the troubles that were faced, leading the singer to question if everything they did was all for naught. The refrain talks about how memories of summer are always present, even when time flies by. The middle of the song discusses the rain that would come in September and how it was always a fun time to play in it even if there was nothing to gain. Despite this, the lyrics emphasize that it was all worth it in the end, even if the singer had to leave their hometown and move on to new things they never imagined.
The chorus repeats the message of reminiscing and how the memories of summer will never fade away, even as time goes on. It highlights the idea that September is a poignant time to reflect upon the past, both happy and bittersweet. The final lines' repetition that they knew they had to leave their hometown, but they never knew how or when, drives home the message of uncertainty and the inevitability of change. Overall, the song captures the mixed emotions that come with reflecting on past memories and the lessons that can be drawn from them.

How the time passed away,
All the trouble that we gave
And all those days we spent out by the lake
Has it all gone to waste?
All the promises we made
One by one, they vanish just the same
[Chorus]

There's nothing left to fear
So we made our way
