Brubeck's style ranged from refined to bombastic, reflecting his mother's attempts at classical training and his improvisational skills. Much of his music employed unusual time signatures, a fact jokingly referred to by his greatest hits album 'Time Signatures: A Career Retrospective'. Upon his death, a number of commentators noted his crossover appeal to mainstream pop audiences, something putting him in the company of other jazz legends such as Louis Armstrong and Herbie Hancock among others.
Lover

I let you
We broke the ties that bind
I wanted to forget you
And leave the past behind
Still, the magic of the night I met you
Seems to stay forever in my mind
And high above
The moon was new
And so was love
This eager heart of mine was singing
Lover where can you be
You came at last
Love had its day
That day is past
You've gone away
This aching heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I'm so lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I grow lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
The lyrics to Dave Brubeck's song "Lover" evoke feelings of longing, nostalgia, and heartache. The song is about a lost love, someone who has gone away and left the singer feeling lonely and yearning for their return. The first verse describes how the singer tried to forget the person and move on, but the memory of the night they met lingers in their mind, suggesting that there was a special connection between them. The second verse paints a picture of the beginning of their love, with the sky being blue and the moon being new, symbolizing freshness and excitement. The third verse reflects on the past, reminiscing about the things the person used to do and how every road the singer walks, they walk with the memories of their lost love. The repeated lines at the end of each verse plead for the lover to come back, revealing the true depth of the singer's longing.
Overall, the lyrics of "Lover" capture the universal experience of longing for a lost love and the anguish that comes with it. The song beautifully expresses the nostalgic yearning felt after a breakup and the hope that the lover will return, even though love itself may feel old and familiar.

I love the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Great group of musicians. Is that Joe Morello on drums?
@aleksz.a.769
Nope, Joe joined the band in 57 i think
@prizmetrix
That's Joe Dodge on drums. The rest of the group at that time consisted of Dave on piano, Paul Desmond on alto sax, and Norman Bates on bass. Joe Dodge was replaced by Morello after he got tired of touring and quit around 1957.
@geoffnelson4777
Morello joined the quartet on 12 October 1956.

@@prizmetrix That actually might be his brother, Bob Bates. Trivia question; who played bass for Dave between Norman Bates and Eugene Wright?
@prizmetrix
@@josephmayotte8879 Joe Benjamin played with the Quartet for one year in 1958.
