Wreck Of The Antoinette
Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Full fathom five, on the seabed she lies - the Antoinette!

I sailed with the dawn and the wind blew free
'Cross the bright shining sea
And it filled the sails of my Antionette

Goodbye home and the one I love
Put my faith in the sky and the stars above
'cause there's nothing in this world I wouldn't bet
On my Antoinette

She carries your name and for you I'll try
To be strong or I'll die
And I'll find my grave in the rolling waves

Ride on baby don't you let me down
Ocean's big and you don't want to see me drown
But a bitter rain begins to beat the deck
Of the Antoinette

See the rain come lashing
There's a sudden flash of lightning on the foam
(Hold on Antoinette!)
The ocean pounds in fury
On a man who fights against it all alone
(Keep on Antoinette!)
She goes down with a sigh
And with her hear that cry
Antoinette! Antoinette!

Dawn breaks on the sea and the long dark night
Now gives way to the light and no trace remains
Of the Antoinette

Deep she lies on the ocean floor
Far away from the girl who still waits by the shore
Does she know her love is buried in the wreck
Of the Antoinette

Deep she lies, deep she lies
Antoinette! Antoinette!

Overall Meaning

The song "The Wreck Of The Antoinette" tells a story of a sailor who sets sail with his beloved ship, the Antoinette, across the bright shining sea. As the sailor bids farewell to his home and his loved one, he puts his faith in the sky and stars above, believing that there is nothing in the world he wouldn't bet on his beloved ship. However, the sailor soon encounters rough weather as the bitter rain begins to beat the deck of the Antoinette, followed by lashing rain and sudden flashes of lightning. In the end, the Antoinette goes down with a sigh, leaving the sailor to find his grave in the rolling waves.

The lyrics describe the deep love and attachment of the sailor to his ship, which is personified as a woman named Antoinette. The ship takes on a symbolic meaning of strength, dependability, and safety for the sailor, who puts his faith in her to weather the stormy seas. However, in the face of the violent storms, the ship is powerless and goes down with the sailor's love and dreams buried in her wreck. The song captures the tragedy of human failure and vulnerability in the face of nature's overwhelming power.

Tich ain't gone yet, I'm sure!
Dave Dee (David Harman) passed away in 2009 and Dozy (Trevor Ward-Davies) passed away in 2015. I may be wrong (I hope I'm not!), but I'm sure Beaky, Mick and Tich are still with us.

I grew up listening to this band from the age of six and fell in love with their music. Of course, The Legend of Xanadu is the most memorable.

I can't sign off without mentioning that Dave Dee (when he was a policeman) was at the scene of Eddie Cochran's car accident. Gene Vincent was also in the taxi as well as Eddie Cochran's girlfriend whom Eddie Cochran covered to protect from the crash, thus dying in the accident himself.

I just thought I'd share that with you.

P.S. A thought has just crossed my mind. You may have been unwittingly guilty of thinking that Trevor Ward-Davies - because of his size - was Tich. He was called Dozy, all on account of a chocolate bar, where he threw away the bar and started eating the wrapper, apparently. If so, I made the same mistake when I was young.

Who’s viewing this in Oct 2021? My appreciation for this upload is enormous, thank you soooo much!! I was born in the 60’s and have fond memories of listening to these songs on my siblings 45’s.  With all the 24/7 covid crap going on in the world today I wouldn’t mind getting into a time capsule and head back there. I love the music and cars of that era, just phenomenal.

Great song by a great and original band. No-one else sounded like them. So many good songs and they wrote them all.

@dralfredcarroll9567

They were indeed a great band but all of their hits were written by the producers Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley. The band themselves wrote a few of their b-sides and album tracks.

I watched this on Beat Club when I was in Germany in 1968. Today I have it downloaded along with many other Beat Club performances you never saw in the US. Anybody who was never in Germany and saw Beat Club doesn't know what they've missed.
Forgot to mention that I also have the complete Beat Club series on DVD.

@maxsugar6394

I agree with you. I first saw and heard all these great groups through the Beat Club. Because at that time there was no better source of information in Germany than AFN or the Beat Club from Bremen. Only a few who were able to visit the Star Club in Hamburg.
