After two years in the army, he returned to Charlie Ventura's band, then worked with Gene Krupa, Stan Getz, and Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. He often worked with Bobby Hackett, including some gigs at Eddie Condon's in Manhattan, playing what Hackett called "Whiskeyland Jazz." McKenna cited Nat King Cole as his biggest influence.

Like Someone in Love
Dave Mckenna Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hearing guitars like someone in love.
Sometimes the things I do astound me,
Mostly whenever you're around me.
Lately I seem to walk as though I had wings,
Bump into things like someone in love.
Each time I look at you,
I'm limp as a glove,
The lyrics of Dave Mckenna's song "Like Someone in Love" are primarily concerned with the sensation of being in love, and the way that this feeling can have a transformative effect on one's perception of the world. The song's protagonist describes how whenever they are in the presence of their beloved, they feel as though they are walking on air, and the simplest things - such as the sight of stars and the sound of guitars - take on a newfound significance. The singer is also self-aware enough to realize that their own behavior can be somewhat erratic and unpredictable when they are in the grip of this overwhelming emotion, and they describe themselves as bumping into things and feeling as "limp as a glove" whenever they look at their loved one.
Overall, the lyrics of "Like Someone in Love" capture the ecstatic highs and occasional disorienting lows of being in love, and demonstrate how this state of mind can color every aspect of one's experience.
