I Hear Them All
Dave Rawlings Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hear the crying of the hungry in the deserts where they're wandering
Hear them crying out for Heaven's own, benevolence upon them
Hear destructive power prevailin', I hear fools falsely hailin'
To the crooked wits of tyrants when they call

I hear them all, I hear them all, I hear them all

I hear the sounds of tearing pages and the roar of burnin' paper
All the crimes and acquisitions turned to air and ash and vapor
And the rattle of the shackle far beyond emancipator
And the lowliest who gather in their stalls

I hear them all, I hear them all, I hear them all

So while you sit and whistle Dixie with your money and your power
I can hear the flowers growin' in the rubble of the towers
I hear leaders quit their lyin', I hear babies quit their cryin'
I hear soldiers quit their dyin' one and all

I hear them all, I hear them all, I hear them all

I hear the tender words from Zion, I hear Noah's water fall
See the gentle Lamb of Judas sleeping at the feet of Buddha
And the prophets from Elijah to the old Paiute Wovoka
Take their places at the table when they're called

I hear them all, I hear them all, I hear them all

I hear them all, I hear them all, I hear them all
I hear them all, I hear them all, I hear them all

Overall Meaning

The song I Hear Them All by Dave Rawlings Machine is a powerful commentary on the world around us. The lyrics describe a world in which people are suffering and crying out for help, while those in power continue to perpetuate their own destructive agenda. The first verse alone paints a picture of people crying out for help in the midst of a barren, desert landscape. The cry seems to be directed towards heaven, begging for some kind of benevolent intervention to ease their suffering. But the cry falls on deaf ears, as those in power continue to hail their own destructive agenda, no matter the cost.

The second verse describes the destruction of knowledge and power, as pages are torn and papers burn. This destruction, in turn, is transformed into air and ash and vapor - meaningless and forgotten. But the rattle of the shackle persists, as even those who should have been liberated continue to suffer in their stalls. And yet, even in the midst of this, the lowliest among us continue to gather and seek some kind of relief.

The final verse is one of hope, as the cry of the people is finally heard. The flowers grow even in the rubble of the towers, and the leaders stop lying, the babies stop crying, and the soldiers stop dying. The voices of prophets from all over the world come together at the table, each with their own unique message of hope and redemption. The world may be harsh and unfeeling, but there is still a glimmer of hope to be found.
