This is just one SM57 mic (A $100 dynamic mic typically used for close micing snare drums) used to record a whole band. And it sounds great!

Johannes Oksanen

@ceilingsandfloors I agree, and yes they are great musicians.

@Johannes Oksanen They're versatile mics, no doubt about it, but I still think this use of it is pretty insane. But it just works really well in this particular case, because this style of music tends to be very midrangey and the tinnier kind of sound quality the 57 gives to acoustic instruments helps give it an overall old-timey radio vibe. Gillian and Dave also seem to use 57s and 58s pretty much exclusively for their live shows, probably for the same sort of reasons.

Johannes Oksanen

Yes, It's typically used for snares and gtr amps but it was developed during 50-60s, that is, it was made for speech and acoustic instruments/string bands.

Dang this is good. Just saw Reina Del Cid and friends perform it this morning. I love both versions of this Grateful Dead classic.

the greatest part about this is Ketch doing the baritone (correct me please if that's incorrect). That deep voice is a riot haha

Jason Umbrellabird

yep, he really held that spot.

Kate Hall

Bri Fitz He's singing bass, not baritone.
