In 4 at bats, I hit three home runs- which of course cleared the fence and a triple which almost made it out but failed by one foot from the top of the fence on a steaming- screaming Line Drive.
Oh yeah, it was an event that was never duplicated again.
Sure, I had many of fine day at the bat but none that ever duplicated the incredible day I had on the ball field.
( For all kids and teenagers it truly is a Field of Dreams.)

I remember this, actually. Scary season with Buster getting hurt badly but thankfully, he recovered. This was one of the few "high points" in a mediocre year between two dreamlike championship years for the Giants.

I think the attendance numbers were inflated, but not as much as you think. The problem is the section you used to extrapolate is in what most baseball parks consider the "cheap seats". Cheap seats never sell out in a weekday game. Pretty much the only seats that sell out on the regular are the seats behind home plate and along the first base line. It's a trick used by the ball teams to make it look like there is a lot of people there for the cameras. I can't tell you how many times I have purchased cheap seats and got moved to premium seating because the crowd was a little thin. I would guess there were probably about 8,000 people there.

Awesome video, great breakdown of the whole situation. However, the crowd density estimation could use some further thinking. 10 people? Count more. It’s the 9th inning for a team that isn’t the most popular, I think it’s reasonable to think a significant portion of the fans left early. Also, the sample size for crowd estimation was taken in the bleachers (not the most popular place to sit) and there’s a real possibility that they just switched to better seats and the ushers don’t care. I think you may have been able to double, even triple your crowd sample size and it would still be accurate.

The Nagy situation was due to the fact that Manny Ramirez (listed as the DH) thought he was the right fielder, and in the bottom of the first he ran out to play right field, so when the DH moves out to the field a team loses the DH and the pitcher bats. A team also loses its DH when a position player becomes a pitcher.

To be fair, the game was in the 9th inning with the Marlins down several runs, so a great deal of people had likely already left, so who knows how many were there during the earlier portion of the game. Probably a lot more. Personally, I think the saddest plate appearance ever was when a Giants relief pitcher went up for his first AB and strained a muscle with his first swing and was OUT for some time. Sadly I don't remember who it was.

How about Moonlight Graham, who was called up to the Giants in 1905, got on deck at the top of the ninth but the batter ahead of him got the third out, was in the outfield in the bottom of the ninth but never had a play on a ball, then sent back down to the minors after the game. Interesting video. Attendance missed one glaring thing though. Most people at baseball games sit along the baselines, and you extrapolated a crowd size of 522 based on an outfield section. I'd go back and estimate the size based on sections behind the dugouts and the plate. Baseball is a unique sport in that the most common camera angle, behind the hitter, is also pointed away from a good majority (or even in some parks, all of) the fans.

yeah, that part of it is totally up for debate. i'll lay out my defense here, y'all can decide what it's worth:

some folks have noted that the screenshot shows more than 10 people, so i wanna stress that i'm strictly talking about section 139, that near-rectangular little section. if someone said there were 8 people sitting there or 20, i'd believe it. i just happened to eyeball it at 10.

that's admittedly a fairly small sample, as it only represents like 2% of stadium capacity. but i don't think it's such a bad representation, because as far as how likely a section is to be populated, i figured it was about in the middle -- the sections behind home plate and near the infield would certainly be a little more populated, but the sections in the upper decks would be way emptier. even accounting for the fact that some of those sections were cordoned off for baseball purposes.

at any rate, really appreciate the alternate theories! this is fun. might be 200 paying customers there, might be 2,000.

For reference, there was a Marlins-Phillies game on May 31, 2017 where baseball reference reports 15,000 tickets sold for that day, but the actual number who showed up was 1,590. Which I guess means over 13,000 people paid money to...not watch the Marlins play baseball that day? The Marlins might be a money-laundering scheme.

Anyway, I'm a little more sold on your video based on this evidence. If a similar crowd of only a couple thousand showed up and 3/4's of them decided "hey we live in Florida, anywhere we could go is better than watching disinterested backups play catch", yeah, this could've actually happened.

I've been to a couple of low attendance games. The right field bleachers is not were I'd look for a representative sample size. It tends to be very thick behind the plate and thins out along both baselines. There were probably a couple thousand there. Also, baseball is fun if you know what you're watching.

Last baseball game I attended was in San Diego for the Padres, regular season, night game.
We SUCK. And that stadium's never ever full (I'd say like 70% of the people there were just there to be social, have some beers and have the game running as a background track.)
But these guys are right... the outfield crowd had only like 50 people in it but I know there were 4K-6K people behind home plate. Nowhere NEAR a full house, but you definitely can't judge an attendance by the outfield crowd.

While I doubt there were 20,000 people at the game, 522 seems impossibly low. To use an OF section as your sample size is a bit foolish since most teams that struggle to draw fans generally encourage them to move to the sections behind home plate and up the baselines. I would say a more realistic attendance figure would be more like 2-3,000.

As for "saddest" plate appearance. I think it has to go to the Cubs' Adam Greenberg back in 2005. His first and only plate appearance (until Miami gave him one more in 2012 for a publicity stunt IMO... confirmed by the handouts the team gave before the game to fans and the fact Good Morning America covered the "event" the next day.... publicity stunt success) he got drilled in the dome. Not only did he have this one plate appearance....... but he got drilled in the back of the head on the very first pitch he saw. Again, the Marlins ruined this baseball trivia fact by giving him another plate appearance 7 years later in 2012. But for having only 2 total plate appearances in his career I'd say his first one was pretty sad. And in that 2nd career plate appearance with Miami..... he struck out. Proof it was just a stunt by the Marlins.... typical Marlins.... Greenberg was toiling away in independent baseball from 2008-2011 before the Marlins gave him his 2nd AB. That fact in addition to the Marlins handing out posters to fans that read "One At Bat Greenberg" before the game also confirms it was solely a publicity stunt.

Totally agree with the 529 people in attendance. Ive been to 4 Marlins games. Paid for 2 games, 5 dollar seats, and got two games free. Every game ive been to there there couldnt have been more than 2,000. Me and my dad were the only people in our section 3 out of the 4 games. Marlins should just be moved to a place that will actually care about them

People keep saying his estimation is way off because way more people sit around the baslines and behind home plate but in his extrapolation he probably included all of the sections that never got any fans ever. There are literally upper decks and third decks that are tarped off. If he just multiplied by number of sections it probably evens out in the end. Went to many games at the old park.

Interesting video. But I think you underestimated the amount of people at the game and overestimated the amount of staff. On games like this with not a huge attendance they won't need to have as many concession workers and a lot of other staff. And the sample you took of fans was in the outfield, usually the outfield sections are far less filled in these games, it's also fair to say many people left the game being down 3 runs in the ninth, especially on a pretty meaningless game like this one. There could also be people walking around the stadium. Good video, but I think you stretched the estimates to say there were more staff than fans. I really doubt that to be true.

The only thing I’d have to criticize is how you arrived at 522 fans from the outfield extrapolation. It stands to reason that the areas of seats along the infield are much more densely populated than the outfield bleachers on any given day. Better seats, higher in demand, especially when so many tickets would be available. I’d say the actual attendance might be estimated between 2000 and 3000. Still abysmal, but hey.

Even if a guy gets his first hit, home run, pitcher gets his first strike out, whatever the milestone is, the ball will go to the dugout and there will be an authenticator there to mark the ball with the little holographic MLB authentication tag and have it recorded

The statistic about the attendance of the game I think is very off because the seats in the outfield are the most likely to be empty. The stands are probably more packed the closer you get to home plate. So using the outfield stands as a sample is goig to produce the smallest result possible. Not to mention 10 seemed a bit low of an estimate in the section

It's way past time to adopt the DH then go ahead and raise the mound. Also find a better option for pitchers to grip the ball rather than resin bags.

Pretty good video of an oddity I would have never known and I love baseball history and trivia. I have also umpired for 32 years now. Pretty good right up to the end where he says baseball is boring. WTF?! Baseball is boring only if you don't get it, if it doesn't run in your blood, if you don't live for it. The only thing more important to me than baseball is Jesus Christ, and my family. So many things are going on during a game that you don't realize only if you don't get it. He doesn't get it. Peace.

The crowd was announced at 20,000 because the Marlins counted ALL season ticket holder as attendees. I had season tickets for the first two seasons. So I was there even when I couldn't make it. Talk about being in two places at once!

I liked your computations about the crowd size compared to the size of the people running the game. However, 1st. There were more than ten people in the picture you showed of the crowd. 2nd. The picture was taken of a bleacher section....always less filled than the baseline seats...I'm not going to be as scientific, or as interesting as you were...I'm going to use the 1000-1500 baseball games I have attended in my life...mostly at candlestick, the coliseum, and the new SF stadium...I saw that picture, and the first "number" that came to my mind...even before you started talking about it was 3500-5000 in attendance. That was a great video I enjoyed it most muchly.
