Alibi
David Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stone blind alibi
I will eat the lie
Find the word
Could break any spell that binds you
Prayers like ammonites
Curl beneath the lights
How I long to
Bite every hand that feeds you more
Where'd it all go wrong
My Friday night infant
Where'd it all go wrong
My Friday night infant

All night buzz on a line
It's only blood on the rime
Wrecks my head every time
It leads me on
Where'd it all go wrong
My Friday night infant
Where'd it all go wrong
My Friday night infant

Tonight tonight
Tonight I'm running wild I'm running
Tonight I'm running wild I'm running
Tonight I'm running wild I'm running
Tonight I'm running wild I'm running
Tonight I'm running wild

Overall Meaning

In David Gray's song "Alibi," the lyrics seem to suggest a sense of regret and disillusionment with the current state of the world. The opening lines, "Stone blind alibi, I will eat the lie," express the idea that people often make excuses and justifications for their actions, even when these are not entirely truthful. The singer then suggests that finding the right word or phrase could break this spell and allow people to see the truth.

The following lines, "Prayers like ammonites curl beneath the lights," incorporate imagery of ancient fossils and the idea that even the most profound words and beliefs can become extinct and forgotten over time. The singer then expresses a longing to "Bite every hand that feeds you more," implying a sense of anger and frustration at the source of these lies and deceptions.

The chorus repeats the question, "Where'd it all go wrong, my Friday night infant?" suggesting a sense of nostalgia for simpler times and a longing for a return to a more innocent and carefree era. The final lines, "Tonight I'm running wild, I'm running," express a desire to escape from the current state of affairs and find a sense of freedom and release.

Overall, "Alibi" offers a complex exploration of the themes of truth and disillusionment, expressed through evocative lyrical imagery and a sense of longing for a lost innocence.

Been humming this tune in my head for a week. This is the first time I saw the video (movie). This is one of the most powerful vignette videos I've ever seen. David Gray is a genius songwriter and this filmmaker did a stellar job.
