Nos Da Cariad
David Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One lifetime is long enough
Is long enough to wait
The rain like silver in my ears
Fat nothing on my plate
A bucketful of Babylon
A belly full of hate
Go to sleep my one true love
And may your dreams be sweet

Then we'll be running

See its face beneath the glass
It murmurs on the breeze
Like a long black Cadillac
It passes â??neath the trees
What is it you're waiting for?
Sweet love is on its knees
Go to sleep my one true love
And find your heart's release

Then we'll be running
Afraid of nothing
Yeah we'll be running

Silence is golden
Here I am
I ain't afraid of nothing
Silence is golden
Here I am

The sun above the cotton grass
Is sinking down like lead
The seagulls know the truth of it
And scream it overhead
Hold on to St. Christopher
The sky is murderous red
Go to sleep my one true love
Our glory lies ahead

Then we'll be running
Afraid of nothing
Then we'll be running

All wired up in a dawning ray
All wired up in a dawning ray
All wired up in a dawning ray
All wired up in a dawning ray

Overall Meaning

David Gray's song "Nos da Cariad" paints a picture of a life filled with long periods of waiting, struggle, and bitterness that is suffocating to the soul. The singer proclaims that one lifetime is long enough to endure such a life, and encourages his love to go to sleep and let go of the burdens of the past. He wants her to find her heart's release so that together they may escape the pain and run away into the future, free from fear and trepidation.

The imagery in the song is vivid, with the rain falling like silver in the singer's ears, and a bucket full of Babylon and a belly full of hate leaving nothing but emptiness in his soul. He sees the face of hope passing beneath the trees, like a long black Cadillac murmuring on the breeze, but wonders why his love is waiting when sweet love is already on its knees. The seagulls know the truth of the sinking sun above the cotton grass, and the sky is murderous red as the singer urges his love to hold on to St. Christopher, for their glory lies ahead.

Wow. I just realized I have been listening for twenty years! His music is a big part of my life’s soundtrack.

@Solmaz_S.

I've been listening to him for 14 years and it's still as new to me as the day I first discovered him. He's amazing

@flinty78

A seriously underrated song, love it

@kirkwhyte1205

This guy is so creative and brilliant in his writing. can't get enough of his music.

@flinty78

Amazing song. "The sky is murderers red" always gives me goosebumps

@tommills1957

White Ladder, Life in Slow Motion and Mutineers are literal works of art. incredible albums

@kelvinjames6603

Mutineers is very flawed. As is LISM. Personally i really like Draw the Line and White Ladder. My vote isn't out yet on ANDAM, there's highlights and lowlights.

@realwestonsharpe

kelvin james I'm split between White Ladder, ANDAM, and LISM. But I agree that Multineers is flawed. He's sadly drifted away from that especially unique folktronic sound I fell in love with.

@rhianhegarty3383

I'm gonna get me some more David Gray....since white ladder I've forgotten how good he is tbh. amazing.

@weirdgetsaround

@Weston Sharpensteen I love draw the line, but I would opt for ANDAM for number one. Songs like freedom, last boat to America, and the Ivor Novello winning other side have such depth and humanity, they're sublime
