Over My Head
David Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No need to stress
And no need to worry
Soon we'll need no
Time or money
Goin' in over my head
Hear the sound of the sea
On the pebble
Just can't help get
Sentimental

Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head

All the striving
All the suffering
Maybe it was
All for nothing
Goin' in over my head
I know these streets
I know these trees
I'm going down
Where the summers freeze

Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over my head

Been a while girl
It's good to see you
Of all the people
to find you here

Goin' in over my head
Wahah
Goin' in over my head
Goin' in over - my head

The night has a million eyes

The night has a million eyes
The night has a million eyes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David Gray's song "Over My Head" convey a sense of surrender and letting go of the pressures and worries of life. The opening lines suggest that there is no need to stress or worry because eventually, time and money won't matter. The repetition of the phrase "Goin' in over my head" implies a willingness to dive deep into the unknown, even if it feels overwhelming.

The mention of the sound of the sea on the pebble and feeling sentimental suggests a connection to nature and emotional vulnerability. The singer may find solace in the simplicity of the natural world, allowing themselves to get lost in sentiment.

The second verse introduces the idea that all the striving and suffering may have been in vain. It's a contemplation of whether the effort put into life's struggles was worth it. The mention of knowing the streets and trees, but going somewhere where the summers freeze, symbolizes a leap into the unfamiliar, even if it comes with discomfort.

The final lines of the song express surprise at running into someone unexpected, creating a sense of serendipity or perhaps a reconnection with an old friend. This encounter adds to the feeling of being overwhelmed but also brings some comfort or familiarity.

Overall, "Over My Head" seems to be a reflection on the need to let go of control and embrace the uncertainty and complexity of life. It encourages a willingness to explore and experience new dimensions beyond one's comfort zone.

As it should be, he's moving forward as an artist, growing, aging like a fine wine.

I love every album of his, and sometimes I'm more in the mood for A Century Ends, A New Day at Midnight, Lost Songs, or Draw the Line...

(His album of live covers, A Thousand Miles Behind, is a gem, too.)

...but I'm glad for White Ladder introducing me to this artist and putting his career on firmer footing.

And I'm just as glad that Gold in a Brass Age has blown me away, can't play it enough.

2020 marks the 20th anniversary of White Ladder. It feels like the time is right to get back together for some kind of celebration. So...there will be a re-release of the remastered album - including on vinyl - and also a worldwide tour. All details at http://davidgray.com.

It was the year I met you and Bernie busking outside the Manchester appollo, the year I lost v my girl, you helped me David and it saved me more than I can tell you. I'll see you in Glasgow with my kids, their all grown up now. I've a new love who saved me though life has kicked me like a rearing stallion in a storm but I'm positive. Your a great artist, we all loved WL, you deserved to make our big that year after that serindipical thrust onto the main stage at glasto, I watched it live, had never seen you before that and I said 'he's the new lord of the chord'. I wish things had worked out and things where out of my control. You gave me a new purpose, I can't even thank you enough brother. I'll see you at the hydro soon.
