The lyrics of "Jai Ganesha" are an ode to Lord Ganesha, the Hindu deity of wisdom, knowledge, and new beginnings. The repetition of "Jai Ganesha" and "Shri Ganesha" is a form of devotional chanting, meant to invoke the blessings of the god. The words "Pahiman" and "Rakshaman" signify protection and imply a plea to Ganesha for security and guidance. The phrase "Gam Ganapataye Namoh Namah" is a mantra used to honor Ganesha and to seek his blessings.
The song is typically sung during religious ceremonies, particularly during the festivals of Ganesh Chaturthi and the Ganesh Visarjan. The upbeat tempo and repetitive lyrics make it a popular song for dance and movement, particularly in western yoga classes.
The song was composed by David Newman, a musician and spiritual teacher who has been a prominent figure in the kirtan and new-age music scenes for several decades. He studied Hindu chanting and music with the legendary Krishna Das, and his albums frequently feature collaborations with other notable kirtan singers like Deva Premal and Miten.
