Stand and Deliver
David Zincke Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Won't you stand and deliver
The weight that carries me
You lie with me
So easily
Maybe this time is the right time
To just let me be
For all that has been went by so easily
So as my fall hits the ground
In the silence I found
I'd be a fool to believe
That something better waits for me
I could be broke by the breeze
Follow as I please
But the truth I believe
Is you the one who waits for me
And you're the only one i see
Well I been a dead man walking
To land me on shore
But what you reap ain't what you sow
What you think ain't what you know
There are times when I have wondered
What the truth is I save
But I built up my conscience
And I threw it away
So as my fall hits the ground
In the silence I found
I'd be a fool to believe
That something better waits for me
I could be broke by the breeze
Follow as I please
But the truth I believe
Is you the one who waits for me
And you're the only one i see
So come on inside
If there's room in your life
If you get tired of the talking
Just keep your feet walking
Come on in

Come on in
Come home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David Zincke's "Stand and Deliver" are rich with themes of love, trust, and self-realization. The song speaks to the idea of standing up and facing challenges, both internal and external, and it questions the notion of what is truly important in life. The opening lines speak to the singer's need for someone to "stand and deliver" the weight that carries them, indicating a desire for someone to be there for them emotionally. The lines "you lie with me so easily, maybe this time is the right time" suggest a romantic relationship or a close friendship that potentially has been rocky, but the singer is hopeful for a better future.

The following lines, "for all that has been went by so easily, so as my fall hits the ground, in the silence I found" seem to indicate that the singer has been reflecting on past mistakes and regrets. They realize that it is foolish to believe that something better waits for them elsewhere, and that the truth they believe is that the one who waits for them is the person they are addressing in the song. The repetition of "you're the only one I see" reinforces the idea that the singer has a deep connection with this person and that they are the one who truly understands them.

The chorus is an invitation for this person to come home, to come inside and be a part of their life. It suggests that they no longer want to be alone and that they are ready for a deeper level of intimacy and trust. The song ends on a hopeful note, with the singer urging the person to come home and promising to be there for them. Overall, "Stand and Deliver" is a touching and emotional song that speaks to the universal themes of love, trust, and the human need for connection.

I was born in 1972, center of GenX. This song was the anthem of MTV for at least a couple of years. Cable TV was brand new. Music on cassettes was still novel. This was coming out of the TV, if you were a teen then, all day, everyday.

In particular, that core riff right at the beginning. You play that so crisp. I literally saw an image of an astronaut on the moon…the technicolor flashing of MTV…and suddenly I was transported to my living room in 1985-86, staring at the TV. I could see the computer-cartoon characters from the video.

I was, I think 14…just starting high school. That song was everywhere. You didn’t like it or hate it…it was like a national anthem. Which was odd, given how transgressive, ambiguous, unorthodox, and bitterly ironic it was.

Incredible cover. I must have heard this song a thousand times, and the guitar riff is chiseled into my ear. But you made it instantly alive again…it was like I had never heard it before. You hit that riff so clear and clean I just want to listen to it a hundred times again.

Amazing.😄
