Before the group had a full line up, Martinez was contacted by phone by Sumerian Records. Former ex band member of Covette, Jordan Wooley (bass), had joined the duo Summer 2012. The band released a video titled 'The Beginning' discussing how the band first formed.
Tyler Shippy (guitar) was welcomed into the band on February 27, 2014. however, the band announced the departures of Shippy in February 2015 and Martinez in July 2015 on Facebook citing personal and creative differences.
On July 5, 2016 the band left Sumerian Records and signed to Spinefarm Records to release their second album, Nexus, which was released on October 7, 2016. This news was followed by the first single from the album, "Carsick", along with the announcement that Zack Baker was the new drummer replacing Martinez.
Zack Baker left the band in 2018, and went on to tour with the post-hardcore outfit Slaves before becoming a permanent member of the band. Tyler Shippy returned to the band as bassist.
Their debut self-titled was released on October 15, 2013. The band's second album, Nexus, was released on October 7, 2016. The band released their third album called Mr. Pain on October 29, 2019.
A Waste of Space
Dayshell Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Believing in true, I love you
A waste of space is cliché
The thought of endless betraying me like a fool
So who needs you?
Lay me down, on the sea
And I know, you've done this before
Tonight my love is unsafe
I'm left with doubts and mistakes
Collapsing into the bottle of you
If I could rewind and go back, I'd destroy the place that we first met at
And I just might
Lay me down, on the sea
You're the crook side of criminal that hardly can breathe
And I know, you've done this before
You took the best of me - the best of me
Lay me down, on the sea
You're the crook side of criminal that hardly can breathe
Don't you see me now, I'm on my knees
You say I'm invincible, but they've all seen my bleed
And I know, you've done this before
In "A Waste of Space," Dayshell expresses his disillusionment and heartache after being betrayed by someone he loved. The song opens with the line "Today the presence's over, awake the dead for closure," suggesting that Dayshell is ready to move on from this person and put the past behind him. He then declares his belief in true love, saying "Believing in true, I love you." However, he quickly dismisses the value of the person he's addressing, calling them a "waste of space" and acknowledging the reality that they've been betraying him all along. He asks the rhetorical question "So who needs you?"
In the second verse, Dayshell continues to grapple with his feelings of hurt and betrayal. He describes feeling "unsafe" in his love for this person, and acknowledges that he's made mistakes. He portrays himself as "collapsing into the bottle of you," suggesting that he's been drinking to try to cope with his pain. Dayshell expresses regret for ever having met this person, saying "If I could rewind and go back, I'd destroy the place that we first met at." He then repeats the chorus, declaring that this person has "taken the best of him" and leaving the impression that he's just starting to realize the depth of their betrayal.
Overall, "A Waste of Space" is a raw and emotional song about the pain of betrayal and the process of moving on from a toxic relationship. Dayshell captures the complexity of his feelings with vivid imagery and powerful metaphors, as well as his unique vocal range and distinctive style.
