When Will You ?
Deacon Blue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pale blue eyes
Same old house no ties
A little bit older but not so
Worldly wise
That i can't see
Your light's on me
Making me regretfully say
The wonder of it all was you
And underneath it all it wasn't true

I want you in everything
In everything
In anything i do
When will you make my phone ring
And tell me i can't give you anything
Anything at all now

Tiny steps
From ruthless legs
When you've been walking so long
Now don't you rest
From disharmony
From disunity
From anything that isn't you and me

The wonder of it all was you
And underneath it all it wasn't true

I want you in everything
In everything
In anything i do
When will you make my phone ring
And tell me i can't give you anything
Anything at all now

Tired of chasing old dreams
Tired of wasting days
Tired of waking mornings
Just to wait for you till late
Tired of searching high
Tired of getting low
Tired of listening hard
Just to wait for you to know that

I want you in everything
In everything
In anything i do
When will you make my phone ring

And tell me i can't give you anything
Anything at all now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Deacon Blue's song "When Will You?" convey the singer's desperate longing for someone who has clearly moved on. Despite the fact that the person with "pale blue eyes" is "a little bit older but not so worldly wise," the singer still sees the light shining on him or her. The singer brands this feeling as regretful and laments that the wonder he/she had believed about this person is now completely shattered. The second verse gives a little insight into some of the sacrifices the singer had made to get closer to this person, including tiny steps and ruthlessly tiring legs. The singer implores this person to abandon anything that isn't what they share and unite with him/her once again.

The chorus repeatedly outlines the singer's desire for this person in every way and in anything he/she does. He/she is waiting for the phone's ring to hear this person's voice, even if just to know that he can't give anything to them anymore. The singer enumerates that he/she is tired of longing for old dreams, wasting precious days, waking up early every morning just to see them come in late, looking high and low for this person, and strains to listen to specific hints to elicit a response from them. Nevertheless, this person remains beyond reach, and the singer remains chained to the wait.

I don't care what anyone else says but for me Deacon Blue had a completely original sound. Their songs were unique and timeless.

I think that was their problem. People like to be able to pigeon-hole music.

I went to see them last night, 31 years after I last saw them. Nothing has changed, still as good as ever, except my sore legs from dancing now.
