Darktown Strutters Ball
Dean Martin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be down to get you in a taxi honey
You'd better be ready around half past eight
Ah baby don't be late I want to be there when the band starts honey
Well just remember when we get there honey

Two steps gonna handle them all
Dance with both my shoes when they play the jelly roll blues
Tomorrow night at the darktown strutter's ball
Well I'll be down to get you in a taxi honey

You'd better be ready around half past eight
Ah baby don't be late I want to be there when the band starts honey
Just remember when we get there honey
Two steps and gonna handle them all

Dance off both my shoes when they play the jelly roll blues
Tomorrow night at the darktown strutter's ball
I'll be down to get you in a taxi honey
You'd better be ready around half past eight

Ah baby don't be late I want to be there when the band starts honey
Just remember when we get there honey
Two steps gonna handle them all
I'm gonna dance off both my shoes when they play the jelly roll blues

Tomorrow night at the darktown strutter's ball

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dean Martin's song Darktown Strutters' Ball depict a narrator who is eager to attend a social event called the "darktown strutter's ball" with a lover. The singer promises to pick up the lover in a taxi at half past eight, urging them not to be late, as they don't want to miss the start of the band. The singer expresses their intent to dance the night away, stating that they'll handle any style of two-step necessary to keep up with the festivities. They anticipate the band playing a particular song, the "jelly roll blues," which will inspire them to dance so vigorously that they'll "dance off both [their] shoes."

The song reflects the "roaring twenties" era, specifically the Harlem Renaissance, which was a period of cultural revival for African Americans. Darktown Strutters’ Ball was a massive hit in the 1920s when it made its debut, and it remains a favourite at jazz and swing dance events today. The song's lyrics help to illustrate the social atmosphere of the time, where dancing and social events were a major form of entertainment. The title of the song references the popular practice of African Americans dressing up and visiting another area to socialize with people from different places.

My brother and I sang this and tap danced in a recital in 1954 or ‘55. Still remember all the words! Love hearing it.

After my father died my Mother came to live with me because she had alzheimers …she sang this song over and over and over…she didn’t remember all the words but she didn’t care. She passed away in 2002 . H earing this song with all the word was heart warming. I sure do miss her!
